I’m taking 2 low dose benzos and my anxiety is completely cured and I’m somewhat functional. I could not tolerate any antidepressants for anxiety(SSRI,SNRI etc), they all were worsening my psychosis except paroxetine. The only side effects i have is memory problems(short term), attention/concentration problems and sometimes confusion.
If it ain’t broke then why fix it! Yes. Stay on the meds and under supervision of a doctor. That is the smart thing to do. Benzo’s aren’t entirely bad but can be addictive and lead to problems when you stop them suddenly. If your not abusing them and they are helping you then that is a small price to pay!
Another thing is that I’m taking 2 benzos cuz i have noticed clobazam was not working for anxiety at 15mg, but suddenly started to work at 10mg but i started to have sleep problems at 10mg. So i added lorazepam(ativan) 1mg for sleep
I had this discussion with my pdoc, as I have been on Diazepam for 8 months now. The dose has risen in that time from 5mg twice a day to 10mg three times a day.
I just said to him, should we really be worried about a benzo when I take APs? And he agreed.
I cannot say I am happy about it, but I tried coming off them and went into meltdown with withdrawals.
They are not even treating the anxiety anymore, which is the most frustrating part. I think he has only given me these drugs to keep me out of the hospital…
If you require them and you are under proper medical supervision, I don’t see an issue. The main concerns are that you build up tolerance, can become addicted, and the withdrawal is a biznatch. If you and your doc okay with the risks, go for it.
i will say theres some potential for long term negative effects on cognition + possible anxiogenic effects in the long run, plus they really arent good for sleep because the sleep architecture effects they have are very negative. then of course you have tolerance and dependence issues. i really think if ad’s weren’t doable then therapy should be the next step rather than a benzo. i am not a doctor by any means, do not change your meds without consulting a doctor, these are just things ive learned from reading.
I am also on Paroxetine and antipsychotics, but I take a beta blocker instead of a benzo.
I prefer Atenolol to Propranolol because it doesn’t cause me any side effects like insomnia.
As far as the memory loss goes it depends on what memories you are losing. If you are forgetting traumatic events that’s great. If you are forgetting appointments, where you put your keys, birthdays of loved ones like your kids or nieces, and nephews then we may be talking about a problem. Report to your doctor about memory loss.
Update: Had to stop taking ativan(lorazepam) cuz it was worsening my psychosis and anxiety. Same thing happened on alprazolam(xanax). Frisium(clobazam) is working fine.
Now even benzos are worsening my psychosis/anxiety. What kind of patient am I ?
If you think benzos are helping your condition then consider taking L Theanine or Phenibut. Both act on similiar receptors in the brain as benzos. Niacin and Picamilion also come to mind.
