some people say the phrase should be ‘person with schizophrenia’, not schizophrenic. they say the label schizophrenic makes the person out to be defined by their illness.
i personally dont mind the word, though i understand why it’s an issue. i dont think people who are diabetic would mind being called that. what matters more is the context in which the words are used.
No, it doesn’t really bother me.
People with diabetes call themselves diabetics, people who survived cancer refer to themselves as cancer survivors.
Why shouldn’t someone with schizophrenia be able to call themselves schizophrenics?
My friend calls me schizo and pill popper. I’m like the schizo is helped by the pill popping. What do you want me to not take pills and become full blown schizo?? It doesn’t bother me so much anymore.
No, not at all.
It’s like being offended by the term “disabled person”. I personally use both “disabled person” and “a person with a disability”. It just doesn’t matter to me. Disability is not a bad term.
I’m with karl I wouldn’t want to be referred to as paranoid schizophrenic even though that’s what I am. Schizophrenic doesn’t bother me. Mostly because I really don’t care what other people think about me, I’m not a social person.
No. I don’t mind being called a schizophrenic. I don’t think it should be demeaning. It’s not different than calling someone a diabetic. Both are diseases which require treatment. I understand there is stigma behind the name. But I think we need to change that by not feeling ashamed about our illness.
I used to get offended by the term psychosis because it’s such a broad term and I never fully understood it. I think if you don’t understand something, the more negativity there is. At least, that’s my case
