Are private hospitals in the USA like hotels

Here in South Africa the private mental health hospitals are like hotels.

3 meals a day, arts and crafts etc etc.

I would rather run away and hide in the bush than go to a public one !!

What are they like in the USA.

Are they similar to hotels?

What is the longest medical aid covers for private mental hospitals.

Here in SA it is 3 weeks

I’m not sure but they used to keep people in psych wards for much longer than they do now.

Yes private hospital here are awesome… but they charge huge amount of money … i am too poor to afford private hospital…!!!

Hospitals in Canada are pretty good, they only let you stay 7 days, some times they stretch it a bit till your stable and you get a Taxi pass to go home

I spent a year in a private mental hospital, and it was pretty nice. They fed us a lot of very good food. There was always an open box of donuts around. Sometimes they fed us lobster. We stayed in different groups about eight hours a day. I’ve been in a couple of hospitals, and I didn’t know what their status was as far as being public or private. A couple of these semiprivate hospitals impressed me with how they did a lot with limited resources. My stays in public hospitals used to last about three or four months. Now it is three weeks at most. There was this one place I went to called “Respite”. You stayed there usually about three days, and you were largely left alone. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was comfortable. Both times I went there I came out feeling much better. This was a better alternative to a much longer commitment. It was a cost effective program.

That must have cost u a fortune.

If you dont have medical aid in South Africa the private hospitals charge 300 dollars per day

In the mental hospital I’ve been in here in Denmark, the service is good. The food is homemade and with fresh ingredients, there’s alway coffee and tea available, and the rooms are cleaned daily.
There’s not much to do, but there are both creative and sporty activities available.
… it was a public one.

No they are not exactly like hotels.
The one I stayed at 2 years ago was a strict and harsh place.
But they did offer us plenty of food and snacks.

There was group therapy, arts and crafts, exercise, etc…

But it was no picnic to stay at.

I think that was about what this hospital charged. It was $12,000.00 a month, $144,000.00 a year.

damn did u have to pay that or did medical aid

My parents paid for it out of their own pocket. It reflects badly on me, but I didn’t respond well to the treatment. Sigmund Freud would probably say I’m the type of mental patient for whom the prognosis is not good.

Not like hotels. They used to be better before regulations. Like I could meet my family in the hospital or room, I could use my cell phone, and i could smoke. Now they’re like daycares.

Yes the private mental hospitals here in South Africa can be like hotels. I went to two and the first one especially was like a hotel and very expensive too!

I’ve been to 7 different hospitals here in the USA. I wouldn’t consider them to be like our hotels. They were set up more like hospitals. They had large main areas by the nurses and eating areas connected to smaller rooms where we slept. They were all locked wards, so maybe that makes a difference.

I’ve been in a few nice ones. The problem is that if you are in a hospital, your mental state is effed up which makes it extremely difficult to enjoy fully the ice cream, ping-pong table or even the food. Or just about anything else. And I’d rather be put in restraints for 3 years straight than sit through another arts & crafts class.

When there wanting to go home.

I agree with @Leaf, they are set up like hospitals.
Nurses station, locked rooms, no cell phones or electronics.
It’s kind of like being in a prison actually.

I stayed at a well regarded private hospital for a few weeks. I wouldn’t say it was like a hotel. I love staying in hotels, and I didn’t like being in that hospital. No cell phone or electronics and very limited Internet access. I also didn’t have a private shower. I agree with those who say it’s more like a prison. On the plus side, the food was decent.
