what are some of your favorite songs/albums?

I can’t remember all of my favorites, haven’t listened to them in a while.
I like this one song called black wave?
I think that’s right.
Their songs are a bit on the depressing side.

I like the Smiths and the Shins a lot. The Smiths were my favorite band when I was in high school.

AWESOME, I really got into the smiths at the end of high school when I was prodromal. I treated morrissey almost like a religious figure. what are some of your favorite songs from both bands? and what is it about the vocals, music, content which appeals to you?

Anyone like Motörhead?

its fair to have that opinion, for me it was an acquired taste, i had to listen to this charming man two or three times, at first i was like “why is this guy moaning and swinging flowers?” “this is unlike anything i have ever heard” then I fell in love with them. what is it exactly you find unappealing about the band?

I’m not sure. Just not my taste really…

the only song i have heard is ace of spades, a little too much machismo for me, not that i don’t like that kind of thing. i just feel like its a bit too “harley davidson” to quote master guitarist johnny marr.

Some of my fav Smiths songs are Half a Person, Rubber Ring, Suffer Little Children, Death of a Disco Dancer, What Difference Does It Make, Hand In Glove, That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, Stop Me if You Think You’ve Heard This One Before… so many good ones! My eternal favorite that sticks with me the most seems to be Half a Person. Imo the heart of the Smiths is Johnny Marr’s guitar playing. I like some solo Morrissey stuff here and there but it’s not the same without Johnny-- so much emotional range in his playing.

My favorite Shins album is definitely Oh Inverted World-- I kind of prefer their earlier, fuzzier stuff. It had a weird, hazy quality. Especially that first track, Caring Is Creepy. Two amazing pop bands, the Shins and the Smiths. Which Smiths songs do you like?

Oh when it comes to the smiths there are a few songs I don’t like, but I have listened to virtually everything. I love the entire world the songs create, where most of the songs are the length of a sentence and collectively they all sort of form this bizarre world, with references to all the dark images which are sort of hiding in morrissey’s brain. compositionally some songs are simpler but johnny marr always goes above and beyond, some of morrissey’s lyrics don’t do a composition justice, like some girls are bigger than others. I love the light uplifting magical sounding songs like this charming man or ask. i like the the campy stuff like handsome devil or vicar in a tutu. I guess thats why i like some of morrisey’s solo stuff.

really the band were a convergence of two stylistically perfect elements, morrisseys clear, velvety “mutant choir boy” vocals and marr’s emotionally layered and multifaceted guitar compositions. i don’t know much about guitar but i have never heard someone who can make instrumentals which sound so well thought out and magical.

i love the dark humor on songs like the death of a disco dancer a lot. i feel like morrisey’s humor is its own brand, or has its own character which might be hard to get, yet some of the things he says have double meanings. for example, the death of a disco dancer might represent the end of the disco era where alternative and indie are taking up the baton. i really don’t know, it is almost like poetry in a way, and i feel morrissey is a master of irony.

i love the songs where morrissey alludes to his own life, arguments with his mother, films he has watched, clothing he likes to wear, business dealings as a young musician (paint a vulgar picture, frankly mr shankly) or in half a person when he describes someone (presumably his younger self) as 16 clumsy and shy. it is so intimate while at the same time being mysterious, as if you are only getting pieces of the puzzle but you are allowed to fill it in on your own and make your own interpretation

I saw The Shins in 2003 right after Chutes Too Narrow was released. And I saw Morrissey twice in 2007, front row! Unfortunately I was born right around the time the Smiths broke up so I didn’t get to see them together.

I have never seen any of the bands live outside of youtube. How are Mercer’s vocals live, his voice is delicate yet has a strength to it?

and which songs did they play, morisseys solo stuff (suedehed etc.). Do you like any of morrissey’s solo stuff, and what did you like off chutes too narrow.

also were you born in manchester or anywhere in england?

Yes, I like Morrissey’s idiosyncratic pastiche of themes too. He really brought his interests to life through music. He was one of the first people to marry the punk tradition to old world romantic poetry. Patti Smith did the same. I really appreciate how the Smiths used sound clips from films and different things in their songs.

As I remember the Shins were great, but it was a long time ago. It’s hard to recall his voice. I forgot to mention “Saint Simon”. what a beautiful song. “Mercy’s eyes are blue / when she places them in front of you.”

My fav Morrissey solo stuff is on Vauxhall & I. And no, I really wanted to visit England when I was most into the Smiths, but I’m American.

I remember he played a few Smiths songs: Shoplifters, There’s a Light, and I believe Rubber Ring too, which was cool.
