Anyone in accounting or bookkeeping?

I have poor math skills BUT I’m taking a refresher course in math right now and I don’t mind it. I’m learning from the ground up. I’m trying to think “practical” in terms of career choices.

I was wondering which math skills I needed to be successful in these type of programs? I’d probably go the bookkeeping route.

Any thoughts appreciated

I’m going to a four year university starting later this month to become an accountant. I had to take statistics and calculus as lower division requirements. I took financial and managerial accounting and those two courses only required knowing like how to add subtract multiply and divide. From what I’ve been told the accounting classes by themselves only require basic math skills. I thought I would try to become a bookkeeper especially since a lot of those jobs allow you to work from home a lot or all of the time. However I did well in my accounting classes and got into another four year university as a business major so I’m going for broke. If you’re going to be a bookkeeper and not an accountant then you’ll probably not have to take any difficult math classes.

I attended college to do bookkeeping
I was useless at it

Yes that’s why I want to do bookkeeping because you can do a lot of the work from home. Plus the program is only two years and I’ll be approaching 30.

Thanks for the feedback and all the best with your studies! Nice to hear another success story

I’m sorry to hear that! I’m kind of scared I won’t be good at it either… but I’m gonna try my best.

I’m actually looking into accounting too because you can study part-time and be qualified as a technician in 2 years but alas I am not mathematical. I veer toward the arts as impractical as it is…

Oh that sounds good. My friend who is really bad at math had a lot of help with her accounting courses. She got a tutor to help get her into the program and even failed her accounting class once. But she’s confident with numbers now and is going to graduate and work in finance. I know we have the lovely added bonus of mental illness but I admire her perseverance and think its worth a shot.

I’m taking an accounting class in community college right now and think it should be easy for a normal person. We only learn one or two important concepts a week. It’s really just adding subtracting and not much real math. You don’t need a math class to prepare for it. English is probably better since there’s lots of word memorizing involved.,.

Thank you . I’m going to be approaching 30 soon as well. I’m already 27 years old but I’ve got a mountain of student debt to pay back so I’m trying to get a higher paying job so that I can eventually pay it back sooner rather than later.

Smart move! An accounting job will definitely help pay off all that debt. I need to pay off mine soon too ,
