Anyone else love chess?

Been getting back into it after ten years of not playing. I used to be good but suck now. Anyone else love this game?

I used to play with dad as a young child. Then around 14 yo I sparred with a classmate for a while. Then stopped playing altogether, with very rare exceptions.
I know the rules, used to know a few openings too, but my ELO would be very low.

My mother’s x boyfriend was teaching me how to play when I was around five or six.
He was nice to me.

I told my father I could play with him because he loves chess.

He started yelling at me and saying he couldn’t believe how stupid I am to make such a dumb move.

I never played chess again.

I am afraid of playing chess and being stupid and so.

I dare not play chess and I’m 46 now and still haven’t played since “my father “ yelled etc.

My dad taught me when I was 7. We used to play a few games every night for a long time. My uncle and some other adults back then would play their kids and let the kids win but my dad never let me win, so when I occasionally won it meant a lot and I got real good that way.

We had a recreation program at our school during the summer where a couple of teachers would supervise us kids and we did arts and crafts and played games. Some of us played chess and I could hold my own or win most of the time. I entered a chess tournament when I was in third grade and I came in first out of a bunch of schools.

I could beat all my cousins and my friends. Me and my dad joined a chess club; when we got there we discovered it was just for adults but the members let me play against one of them. He won but he was amazed at how good I was. This was all before I was even in fourth grade.

I still played my dad occasionally in high school but when I was 19 and was put in my first psyche ward I played chess with one of the interns in there but I was so screwed up I couldn’t finish the game with him for literally the first time in my life. I think the last people I played were my two nephews 10 years ago and I won handily.

You’re lucky for being a natural player! I was always average at the game. In my school years I was a photographer.

I played a lot of games to get good. I always wanted to take photography in school, it looked like fun but I always took academic classes instead. Taking photography in school really payed off for you, you’re pretty good.

I didn’t take many photography classes, I learned by trial and error.

I played Chess and I know the rules, but am horrible at it. I mean, I’m not good playing in a social setting anymore and am horrible against the computer lol. I know the rules and know how to play, but am terrible if that makes any sense. Your post inspired me to download a Chess App and play. I am also horrible at Solitaire. I’m not sure I even know how to truly play.

There seems to be a correlation between being good at math and being good at chess.

I played a lot of games growing up in middle school like checkers and chess after school. In high school, I was an idiot, but beat my math professor at chess once and the smartest kid in my algebra class too in chess. I mean, I think they were shocked because everyone thought I was a moron and stupid.

Well I don’t think you’re stupid. Chess can take talent and brains.

I recently read “The Master of Go” by Yasunari Kawabata. Based on real facts happening in Japan in the wake of WW2.

I never played Go but heard about it. It’s supposed to be better than chess, right?

As much as I love the game I don’t have the cognitive skills to play against people. I get flustered with backgammon so chess is three times more difficult when it requires sharp thinking and steady focus.

I’ve been playing on my phone and have been steadily getting better. I hope I can get good at the game.
