Anyone been to Hawaii?

I really want to go but it’s too darn expensive. Have any of you been to Hawaii?

Was it fun? What kinds of cool things have you done there?

Would like to go but a 1-2 week trip would set me back thousands of $

That’s why I won’t go lol

I lived on the island of Oahu for 3 years in the mid 90’s on a military tour. Yes, it is terribly expensive. We needed to live off-base for about a year until we were up for housing and even three decades ago I recall everything being about triple the price of the mainland. Because of being lower enlisted the only really cool things we did were visit Lanaii’ for a day, go to the local tavern’s and if course the beach.
What I most enjoyed was it rained everyday like clockwork for about 10-15 minutes. And if one side of the island was too hot for you, you could just travel up the coast to the other side!

Yes, I went at age 9 for my aunt’s wedding. The beaches were amazing and the sand was so soft. I believe I stayed on Maui.

Do you think it’s worth the price?

I wouldn’t travel there because it’s over water, and I think most travel is really cost-prohibitive. Going from the NE United States to Texas tends to cost at least $3 grand after flight, rental car, hotel, food, and an activity are totaled up- and that’s just for me! Add on an extra $2-3 grand for my hubby and one kid. It’s nuts.

I can’t afford it, my aunt was wealthy at the time. That’s a really dependent question. If you have lots of money, sure, if you don’t have lots of money, no I wouldn’t spend the money.

However I imagine it’s cheaper and more convenient than out of country vacations because you don’t need a passport or to deal with foreign currency or anything like that.

I lived in Hawaii for a little while in my younger years. It’s a beautiful place with nice climates but it is very expensive to live there.

A few rules to live by if anyone ever visits there or decides to move there:

  1. Don’t kill the first lizard you see in your house. It’s considered a Blessing and they will eat spiders and other pests.
  2. Flip flops are called “Slippers” or “Slippahs” and they can also be used to clean scuff marks off the floor.
  3. A Hawaiian shirt can also be used as a dress shirt for most occasions.

Cheers!

@Montezuma
Do you happen to remember the infamous pineapple plantation spiders?

Hi @coffeehead !

Idk if I remember those specific spiders but I remember when I lived in Maui we had these gigantic spiders that looked like something out of the Alien movies! :grimacing:

I also lived in Oahu, “the big island” when I was around 2 but I don’t remember a whole lot of it.

My aunt and uncle go there every few years. Don’t think it would interest me much as the only place I would vacation to is basically all the state parks in Minnesota. Won’t happen but still fun to think about.

Yes, I’ve been to Hawaii twice.

I’ve been to the islands of Kauai, Maui, O’ahu and the big island.

How nice was it?

It was beautiful. We weren’t in a scenic area of Maui and only there for a couple of days. It’s supposed to be nice though.

Kauai was really beautiful because it was largely untouched. Of course, I was there 25 years ago.

The big island we were there six years ago and that was really beautiful. I would highly recommend Hawaii.
