Clozapine definitely cut down suicidal ideation in me when i was on it. I’ve never found another med that did that so well.

The problem is that antipsychotics block dopamine in many areas of the brain. This generates such strong sedation that it ends up causing suicidality in many people. If doctors discovered an antipsychotic that acts solely on dopamine in the mesolimbic area (associated with positive symptoms), the negative symptoms and suicidality would also be resolved. Because there would be much more dopamine available in the brain.

Lithium didnt work for me on that. I actually ended up feeling worse as I became so lethargic. Wish it had helped.

I agree with @AwesomeFisherman
Lamotrigine (Lamictal) is a powerful very effective antidepressant mood stabilizer.

I’ve been on them all including Depakote, Tegretol and Lithium

Nothing beats Lamictal for depression

I read a study in mice, in which Lamotrigine prevented the negative impact of elevated brain cortisol levels on the hippocampus. Thus it may limit the negative impact of stress.

I’m not competent enough to know whether the study was correct, whether it has been replicated, and whether the finding translates into humans.

I liked being on lamotrigine, but for some reason I developed a pain in a testicle. A very weird adverse effect, I tried decreasing the dose and increasing the dose, and this side effect disappeared and reappeared, so I ditched lamotrigine.
