Akathisia from Abilify

I’ve been on 15mg of Abilify for about 5 weeks now, recently I’ve been feeling extremely restless and the need to always keep moving. I spoke to my psychiatrist about it and she said it’s akathisia. She said if it’s not too distressing that we can just leave it alone, but if it gets worse that she can prescribe something to help with it. I don’t want to go off of Abilify because it’s helping me quite a bit more than other APs have. Does anyone have any luck with a med helping with akathisia?

Im not sure…I am trying to take herbal medicines. My doc. is opposed to that.

Personally, I don’t trust herbal supplements. And my pdoc doesn’t want me trying any while I’m on clozapine. Apparently a lot of things interact with it

Yes I told my psychiatrist I was taking Quinine because Trump said Hydroxychloroquine prevented or cured covid19. But it does have some uses. Like it helps with muscle cramps, but it can raise your pulse/like a stimulant and can cause hypersensitive reactions. I was taking 500mgs like every other day which was likely a dangerous way to take it. But it did help with my muscle cramps to be honest, and it calmed me down a bit, made me feel awesome. It caused my ears to ring worse/and increased mania. I had to stop taking it…had to get on Ambien too because now I am dealing with insomnia.

I’m also on 15 mg of Abilify.

When I cut out coffee things got better. I think coffee and abilify are anxiety city together.

This also helps a lot

There’s research that says broccoli sprouts extract helps schizophrenia.

I should probably cut out the energy drinks… all that caffeine can’t be helping

I didn’t get akathisia from Abilify but did from Latuda. The Dr prescribed Benztropine after I complained but that med took 20min to work. I ended up switching to risperdal.

I found it got less with time. It was hell early and really annoying. Still. It didn’t work out for me and I ended up changing back to zyprexa but it was worth a shot. Hang in there and keep your doc in the loop. I did find that the akithisia did become less for me for sure.

I had akathisia from Abilify too, at 10 mg. I also became darkly and seriously depressed and suicidal. Pdoc said never again can I take Abilify. Okay. Fine by me. Also, it made me hallucinate music. Never had that happen before.

I have restlessness from long term use of medication for schizophrenia. Try stretching exercises, standing or on the floor. I just made a post about it on health and recovery section.

Propranolol was the only med that worked for me.
I took it as a PRN for a while, but once the restlessness kicked in, it took too much to calm it down.
Now I take 10 mg twice a day and this small dosage seems to keep it at bay.

You could read about restless legs, might get some tips.

A short burst of extremely strenuous leg activity like a static bike ride can do wonders to relieve akathisia.

Sprint for a 100 metres if you have no bike. Really push it until the lactic acid builds up.

If you have akathisia really bad it is worth a try and it will really help.

When I was on abilify 30mg I paced all night and day, akathasia is stressful, isn’t there a med for pacing? It starts with a p or something.
