Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need

We’re the middle children of history. No purpose or place. We have no Great War, No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars, but we won’t”

Marketing propaganda is all I can say.

I hate it when I see sign board in front of retail shop that read (I can’t remember the exact phrase): Buy what you want, not what you need.

I don’t need a big house or an expensive car or fancy brand clothes. My parents had all that and I just don’t see the point.

Our war is the toughest changing spirit causes chaos and death…to some…it has yet to start really…the past must die first…

It’s all about capitalism and making money. Some of us are having second thoughts about the awesome power of capitalism to generate wealth. Witness Bernie Sanders. Then there is the boom and bust cycle of the free market. I’m still not sold on socialism, but some of the proponent of this system make more and more sense to me.

I don’t get american’s aversion to socialism, it’s the best thing about my country aside from the nature and weather.

Droids will take all of mans jobs…I hope…then peace shall be true…but they will be weaponized first…and used against people…they will be domesticated hopefully shortly after…Amazon’s working on pushing drones ahead to help deliver…internet ushered in chaos…but through these fires peace shall win either way…

Most Americans believe it was capitalism that provided us with our great standard of living. They still look to this system and free market ethics to solve all our problems. After the economic meltdown in '08 people are starting to blame capitalism for the excesses of the market and for the greed that provides a high standard of living for those at the top, but is sucking the middle class dry.

I get that, same thing happening here. But socialism is not the oposite of capitalism, I live in a socialist and capitalist country… I think Mccartyism is to blame really, because things aren’t that black in white. At all…

I think the only not completely capitalist country in the world is probably Bhutan…

Some guy at aa shared yesterday he wanted to be lead singer of a rock n roll band…and when he realized that it wasn’t gonna happen he realized his life was going nowhere and he had to get sober. Nothing very insightful here but I found it funny and related to your op.

My parents have friends who are very shallow economically…like they think they deserve the most luxury in the world and whatnot and don’t think about the middle and lower class at all. I like Hispanics in America because they’re very relaxed and simple lifestyles. They work their landscaping and handy work jobs and seem so happy. I just talked to Jesus and he’s the frickin man (my parents landscaper) …I don’t get the idea of going crazy with career aspirations. I just want a rewarding job that makes me enough money. Screw vacations in Rome I don’t need that, and dinner at pene bene…Chinese food will do…Washington I liked because no one drove fancy cars yet everyone was college educated and worked. But even if yer rich you don’t flaunt it…no need to flaunt because that’s what it is. I enjoy beauty, nature, the simple thibgs in life.

We have comforts available to us today – and that’s even those on assistance – that weren’t available to royalty in times past. We just think we’re poor because we see others with more and feel jealous.

You can have both capitalism and socialism. It’s sort of what we do in Scandinavia. We also have very little corruption compared to other countries.

I’ve thought that many times. I probably eat better than a Roman emporer. Actually, my life is quite a bit better than a Roman emporer’s. I know they didn’t have air conditioning back then. Rome did have running water brought in by the aqueducts, but in the palace of Versaille they just relieved themselves in corners.

I never liked generalized statements taken out of context like this one. The thing about capitalism and free market is that they affirm individualism and free choice as opposite of the socialist collectivism and state tutoring.
Socialism is economically illiterate system and you can see examples wherever you look at.
I don’t know about the socialism &capitalism coexistence - I think its rather about providing free education and health insurance without taking in to the ideological level that is a complete historical failure.

Entrepreneurship drives growth. We need that in society as well. Its just unbalanced.
I’ve met lots of people who’ve made it in different industries.
Business startups is like a game. A risky game lol

I’m not happy with the stock market as it exists right now. It doesn’t reward those who create actual, tangible value in terms of products and services. I’m questioning the need for it.
