I’m envious of people who reallly really love music the way you seem to. My dad was like that. He just never stopped listening. I play guitar and I’ve put enough time in that I’ve gotten pretty good but I never really fell in love with music like that. I bet if you picked up an instrument you’d become a great player quick.

Well I have to say that I’m envious of peeps who can actually play instruments ! That’s cool you play guitar— I think it takes a certain kind of mind and a lot of discipline to be good at it for sure. And also that your dad was so into music— my dad introduced me to a lot of different sounds and stuff when I was little, so I think that’s where it started for me :+1:.

Same for me. My dad’s the reason I play. He was obsessed with Clapton for some reason though. I understood early and even mid career Clapton like up to live at Hyde park but after that I didn’t get it. But when you play a lot obviously you have your influences and hero’s. Players that creep there way into your own technique. There’s a bunch of them but we all have one that stands out the most. Clapton was definitely thad guy for me.

Lovin’ that Christopher Cross album from your first post!

That’s neat your dad was so into Eric Clapton, and got you into him as well :+1:. Eric Clapton is pretty prolific— it’s kind of cool that he was in a couple of influential bands early on with some other really great musicians… It’s wild to see how the 60’s scene kind of evolved and stuff. Not as familiar with his catalogue as I should be, given he’s one of the greats, but I respect his work!

That’s awesome :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello Tuna

Your second haul looks really interesting. I’m not familiar with many of the artists but their album covers are very unique and I bet their music is definitely interesting.

Edit to add:

I was gonna pm you, but I’ll go ahead and ask you here, have you ever heard of Ben Davis shirts and clothing?

I’m a little obsessed with their zip up work shirts.

Hiya Monte :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks! :+1:

Wasn’t really familiar with most of those artists either, so I tend to blind buy most of the records based on the album covers . I also try to see on the back of the cover what kinds of instruments are used on the albums to get a rough idea of what I’m walking into, lol.

…I suppose one could always YouTube the record to preview it before buying, but where’s the fun in that?

Just looked up some Ben Davis shirts— very nice and durable-looking! They remind me of Cholo-style clothing :+1:. Where do you buy yours from?

Oh right on! I have some records that I’ve bought based on covers too. I have this one funny really old, I wanna say 60s era record, of these priests who play folk music LOL. I’ll try and get a pic of it someday for ya.

Yeah I agree, it’s more fun to discover the music on your own rather than trying to sample it in the store.

Oh yes ma’am, Ben Davis is total Cholo/Californian street culture clothing. I kinda buy my Ben Davis gear between their official online store and various clothing outlets on eBay. It’s kinda hard to find stores that sell it out here in the MidWest. Their clothes are a little pricey, but they last forever (If not a lifetime!) and you totally don’t need to handle them with kid’s gloves because of how tough and durable they are.

Haha oh wow! That is gold, instant grab! Sounds like a good one :+1: It’s amazing what you can find out there lol.

I think one of the more out-there records I currently have is from the 60’s also, and it’s this jazzy guy and his crew and apparently they recorded it in a barn out in New England and it has like earth sounds and wolves and whales on some tracks, lol! It’s this one:

That’s pretty awesome :+1:. Their clothes look really high quality and cool as well. I could see Ben Davis being a little pricey since it’s like really durable workwear, but it seems like you pay for the quality. But It’s always good when you can score some deals on eBay as well :+1:. Good stuff! :slightly_smiling_face:

HA HA! I remember when you got that record! :joy: Wow, it sounds super rad though.

Yeah thrift stores are just full of these little ā€œgolden nuggetsā€ as I call them. It’s kind of mind blowing like how much music was put on vinyl and then totally forgotten about.

I was wearing my Ben Davis gear earlier today in Walmart and this beautiful Mexican lady was totally checking me out. :joy: I wanted to talk to her but she had a boyfriend. I was still very flattered though.

Yes! I got that record aaaaages ago but didn’t have my turntable set up yet so it was a mystery for years… Worth the wait though!

So true— it’s wild what you can find at the thrift store. Most of the time it happens when you’re not even looking for something . And yea, it seems like they just put anything and everything on vinyl back then, haha.

Niiiiice, looking good and feeling good! :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:

Hope you have a great rest of your night Monte, think I’m gonna try to sleep. See ya! :slightly_smiling_face:

More finds from today:

The Mondo Cane record has sent me down a bit of a rabbithole, learning about early ā€œshockumentariesā€ and stuff. Honestly, knowing what I now know about the film itself and the genre as a whole, it makes me a little queasy listening to the tracks. Might give back to the thrift store due to bad juju, even with the film and soundtrack having been as influential as it was.

I am pretty excited about the Langston Hughes album though. Haven’t listened to it yet, but I figure spoken word and poetry could be interesting to sample. Having learned about Langston Hughes in school, I think this could be a positive and important addition for sure.

La Paloma by Billy Vaughn seems to be a Latin-inspired orchestral situation. I feel like some peeps from back in the day were defos vibing to these tunes and some drinks with those little umbrellas in them .

Thanks!

Was thinking hip hop or something along those lines to start. Although EDM and LoFi would also be cool to try :+1:

Looking forward to seeing more of your work on the production thread whenever you wanna share btw!
