So… My neurotypical wife ran my iPhone 4s thru the washer this past week. It’s the device that functions as my short-term memory. I’m completely scrambled without it right now. On any given day I can count on about 30 alerts reminding me of things I need to do (including checking this site) because I’m THAT disorganized.
I have a 2013 Nexus 7 tablet I’m sort of limping by with, but it’s too darn large to fit in a pocket and it is reliant on WiFi. No good when I leave my home. This was a problem for me yesterday while shopping in a mall with my wife. When I start to get overwhelmed with crowds I can surf around online, etc., to distract myself. Didn’t have my phone to do that and left my tablet back in my suitcase because it was too large and had no Net anyhow. Came home a wreck last night because of this.
Have a Sony Xperia z3 on order, but it may take a couple of weeks to get here. It’s supposed to be a great phone. It was a toss-up between that and the iPhone 6+, but I don’t see how Apple justifies the extra $$$ when the their tech specs aren’t that great these days and their user experience is now about the same as Droid. Here’s a review:
Two main concerns with the purchase… One, I’m worried the unit may be a bit too big for my pocket. Second, I just read that Sony is getting out of consumer electronics, so one can only guess what the future support for my device will be:
On the plus side? Waterproof. Take THAT, washing machine!
The timing wasn’t too bad on this as my contract was a month from expiring and my provider waived the last $12 of my device fee, except that my old unit was still doing the job and I planned to keep using it until it wasn’t. I’m cheap that way.
Whatever. Bottom line is that I need my short-term memory back.
I guess my life is from the cave-man days. Everything I need to do is either written on my paper calender or up on a post-it and tacked to a bulletin board.
You’ll notice the Xperia has slightly better specs. The real difference is price. I can stick a uSD card into the Xperia and get 144 GB of storage for about $600. An iPhone 6+ with equivalent storage is approx $1350, and the storage is permanent. Since most of the services I use (think Google) are device agnostic, it doesn’t really matter what phone platform I’m on. In fact, since I’m Google centric, I’ll have a better experience on Droid.
You’re quite right that the iPhone 6 is marvellous. I’m just not convinced the price is justified for what Apple is delivering.
what this means but yeah I use my phone for emails (and other things) and I use a hardback calendar for appointments. I also take Optimum Nutrition natural whey, hydro whey, Gaspari glycofuse, Cellucor C4 extreme (this is the borderline okay one), and two gallons of water every day.
I think I take 10$ worth of supplements somtimes, it takes me about 20 minutes to get them out of the bottles and in my stomach. I have to becarful not to choke on them some pills are huge.
Looking at $150 and up for an iPhone 4s with cosmetic damage to around $225 for one that has been babied. This is over 3 year old, seriously out of date tech. No LTE support, for example. None of them have new batteries, so I’d still be on the hook for a replacement. iPhone 5s seem to run around $350. Just not a good value proposition. The phone is a biz write off, so I may as well have one that I enjoy using.
Don’t have enough $$$ in the company account to pay full price right now. Had to spread it over a 2 year contract. Went with the Sony Xperia z3. Sony announced they were withdrawing from the consumer electronics market at the time I purchased, which was worth $100 off. It’s a good phone.
I’ve lost stuff on computers before but never had a phone device. thankfully the few things I need reminders for I jot down on paper…of course I’ve had papers in my pocket washed a couple times too, or lists left at home after leaving for the store
