A Randomized Multi-Center Investigation of Folate Plus B12 Supplementation in Schizophrenia

Had anyone tried folate+b12 for negative symptoms?

I just tried Folate on it’s own, I also tried sublingual (under the tongue) b12 liquid on it’s own.

I found both of them to be like taking multiple coffee espressos.

I might try them in combination to see if it’s a different effect.

Well, I’ve ordered some b12. I already had some Folate.

I expect the result will be like drinking a lot of espresso but we’ll see.

I recently quit multi b vitamin. It was stimulating. I am more relaxed without it, but less sharp.

I occasionally still take folate. 1 or 2 times a week, but I don’t know if it does anything. On paper it’s supposed to be helpful.

I take a mens multivitamin every day with B vitamins. I’m able to do everything I need to do every day. I still have some negative symptoms. I don’t think anything helps with them.

I don’t have schizophrenia, I have anxiety+depression, and I feel like methylfolate and folinic acid have returned me to a employable condition. I lost the ability to translate fast in November 2020, but at least I’ve been able to work as a food delivery guy since March this year. I had started on methylfolate in September 2023, and felt better almost instantly, and added folinic acid injections (i/m) this June, and felt better again.

Both methylfolate and folinic acid are forms of the vitamin B9 (folate) which have a better capacity for reaching the brain.

To be fair, I know only two persons with depression who have felt an improvement on methylfolate, others have written (in a Russian psychiatric web-forum) that they have felt nothing.

I took another one today just to see.

I think it might be doing something subtle.

I have some motivation whereas before I had none !

Hmmm…

I’m feeling a kind of pressure on my heart which is making me nervous.

The b12 is stimulating and I’ve had 3 coffees today too.

I might have to discontinue it .

Ok, I’m trying it again.

This time with only 2 coffees.

The methyl ones that dissolve under your tongue are the most effective at actually getting into your body.

I suck one every 3-4 days because I’m already taking multivitamins.

Folate improves my mood and also reduces negatives a little bit. B12 reduces my positives a little bit, and makes me emotional. From my experiments B12 is the biggest dopamine producer, so taking it too much may be not good for schizophrenia.

The RDA for B12 is 2.4mcg daily. So basically the supplement you got has more than 200 times what we are supposed to get in a day.

The reason they make them like that I suspect is poor bioavailibility, but there’s no telling how much each person absorbs.

I have had bad experience with high dose B12 in the past in form of insomnia.

“Intrinsic factor is needed for your body to absorb B-12. For example, only about 10 mcg of a 500mcg oral supplement is actually absorbed in healthy people”

Ok. It seems to make a positive difference. But I think 1500mcg is too much.

I’ll order 500mcg next time.

For me 10mcg daily is too much, I become too emotional. So I take 10mcg every 4th day to keep my positives lower. I wish there would be 2mcg pills on the market.

Out of curiosity I tried it again but with just 1 cup of coffee this morning (instead of 2) and it was the same result, i.e. an uncomfortable heart pressure at the end of the day.

I’ll update again when I get 500mcg. 1500mcg is TOO much lol.

From bing:

Vitamin B12 is essential for many bodily functions, including DNA production and red blood cell formation. However, like any supplement, it can have side effects, especially if taken in high doses or through injections.

Common side effects of Vitamin B12 supplements include:

  • Mild diarrhea
  • Itching or skin rash
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting¹²

Serious side effects are rare but can occur, particularly with injectable forms:

  • Pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure (early in treatment)
  • Vein thrombosis
  • Sensation of swelling
  • Polycythemia vera (a rare, slow-growing blood cancer)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), which include swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, and difficulty swallowing and breathing¹²

If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your needs.

Do you have any specific concerns about taking Vitamin B12?
