A ramble about my latest thing to look forward to in life

My current thing I’m looking forward to in life is raising some juvenile toads. In captivity they can live for over 10 years.

I plan to work on a vivarium habitat throughout April, and then in May I will be going down to visit my grandparents who live on a lake, so I will be able to find toads there. Where I currently live is too urban with too much pollution.

I may even be able to get a breeding pair (I plan to house 3-4 toads), and if they lay eggs in their soaking dish, I know how to raise the eggs and tadpoles, and then I can release them by the lake on another trip that is already planned around the time they would be ready for terrestrial life.

That would be so rewarding, the only other species I have ever raised from birth was softshell turtles from eggs that I rescued and then incubated. They had been dug up by kids on a beach while I was on vacation by the big lakes of Kentucky. I transported them back to northern Indiana and hatched them. I suppose I should have just re-buried them but I convinced myself enough I was “rescuing” them because I wanted the experience, admittedly.

Yes I could have been on the DNR’s most wanted list by age 10 lol. I got more than a few turtle hatchlings home from lakes by hiding them in my bathing suit when the DNR came around to question what I was doing on this private lake with buckets and nets. Things only kids can get away with. I am too old now to get away with such things and would have to order hatchlings online like everyone else (or be very very sneaky). :hushed: Probably sneakier than I can actually be, I am way too clumsy to be a ninja.

Over my life I have raised garter snakes, painted turtles, map turtles, softshell turtles, musk turtles, snapping turtles, red-eared slider turtles, box turtles, etc but toads are still on my bucket list, as well as hissing cockroaches. I would release the turtles back into the wild, my grandparents’ lakefront as it was ideal for them, when they would get to about 4" in length. I also would enjoy tortoises and chameleons but I also have to be realistic about how I need less expensive, lower maintenance pets due to my lot in life.

Which is fine because the toad is my favorite animal and is completely doable, so I have no regrets or complaints.

I may be crazy but this is my one thing I’ve always been rather good at and passionate about. I have built some pretty awesome habitats before and seem to have a knack for this type of creature. I have also successfully created a flourishing Armadillidiida colony before that reproduced numerous times, so I can even breed some supplementation food and not have to buy it all in stores.

It’s been years since I pursued this hobby, I think the last time was over 5 years ago that I had a herp pet. I am rather excited and will likely obsess about it for the next two months while waiting to make the trip.

Thats awesome and cool. Hope it all goes to plan.

I’d love to raise some of these, too. Can’t but at least I can enjoy them on YouTube through others. The cuteness is almost deadly.

Interesting - having something like that to look forward to is great.

Today I’m walking to the Salvation Army thrift store to see if I can find the perfect (and cheap) ceramic or flower pot to use as a cave in the habitat. I have about $5 so that should be enough, might even find the perfect soaking dish, as well. I’m a little concerned that I have so much energy all of the sudden, didn’t sleep all night but don’t feel tired at all, or uncomfortable. I feel good, just lots of energy and my mind is gogogogogo. But might as well make use of it and leave the house with a reason for the first time in several months.

I like using things from thrift stores for projects. I hope you post pictures as this comes along.

For sure once it’s all set up, and then of my toads once I get them.

The mission was a success. I walked 6 miles total, my body feels like I fell down the stairs lol, I am so out of shape from spending a year as a recluse in the house.

I couldn’t find anything that I liked enough for a soaking dish, but I did get a mauve-coral flower pot to use as a cave, and a mostly-matching feeding dish for mealworm treats. Also got a fake potted plant that I can rip out of the pot and plant in the substrate to use as cover foliage to help them feel more secure.

I also passed this reptile store place that I hadn’t seen before, so will have to stop in there some other day to see if they have any potential treats or better cricket prices than PetSmart. Would be cool if they had hornworms as they are highly nutritious. A bit pricey usually but not too pricey to be once a week treats.

Good on you for getting out! And isn’t it great - once you get out you see some new things that will give you more motivation to go out again.

Yuuusssss I found a worm breeder right here in my state so the shipping won’t be insanely expensive.

And they have hornworms: https://www.wormdepot.com/collections/hornworms-goliath-worms/products/25-120-live-hornworms

Prepared the enclosure today. This is most definitely herping on a budget. Decent sized glass terrarium costs hundreds of dollars. So instead I bought this plastic tub at Home Depot for $13 and drilled air exchange holes in it.

I just clicked on a site called wormdepot. That’s something I didn’t see happening when I woke up today.

My high school chemistry teacher had a 10gal glass aquarium with four or five of these guys in it. He’d bring it out and put it on his desk if students were goofing around too much. I love them but my kids would throw a fit (and my landlord too…). The noise they make is strangely soothing.

Nice lol. I think I mostly just like to feed things. Chill pets that like to eat are cool with me.

Ordered the substrate, some nice organic potting soil.

Have never tried this type before, hopefully it’s good.

I tried to look up what this soil looks like / texture online and apparently it’s mostly used for growing weed lol. I am probably on a naughty Amazon list now :spy: but little do they know it’s bedding for toads. It arrives Wednesday, some reviews say it can come with gnat infestations, hope that doesn’t happen, or if it does, then my toads will need to have babies so the babies can eat all the gnats.

I ordered some eco earth to mix with the potting soil. I now have everything I need except a spray bottle for misting, I can pick that up at the dollar store this weekend. Today I went to Joann Frabrics and bought one more artificial plant, I think I’m going to do foliage cover instead of caves. I also stole two rocks out of their landscaping.

You really look like you know what you’re doing. Even I’m getting excited about this now!

Sorta, I have tons of experience with turtles but actually very little with toads, so I’m trying to theorize and learn as I go, a bit. I’ve decided to feed them primarily nightcrawlers because the calcium/phosphorous and protein/fat ratios are superior to other food options based on what I’ve read, but just a week ago I was planning to feed them something different, before trying to dig for nutrition info on the different worm types (wax, butter, horn, etc).

Luckily toads in general are pretty low maintenance and forgiving, they just have sensitive skin and absorb water/air through their skin, so that’s the main area where you’ve gotta be very careful.

Awesome! Have you ever thought of becoming a wildlife ranger or ecologist? I think those people putter around an ecosystem checking into what is happening in different animal and bug populations. There is this really pretty little brown lizard with yellow stripes and a bright blue tale common to where I live. I’ve often wondered how widespread this species is.

Skinks? All I could think of off the top of my head.

I bought a kitchen scale for my roommate and for weeks afterwards all my recommended items were drug paraphernalia :smile_cat:
