It’s a better story if it’s a girl frog, so instead just say you have good literary instincts

If you don’t know if the frog is male or female, and you’re not trying to add a charming, non-literal twist to your story, then you would say “it”. But using “her” in your story gave it a sweet, personal flavor. It made it sound like you had taken the time to get to know the frog. It was a nice touch.
