My first job was as a dishwasher in a family restaurant. They hired me to work nights but I was only 17 and you had to be 18 at that time in 1978 to work nights. It was a law. So lied on my application and I said I was 18.
I got hired and they liked my work and after a month and a half I got promoted to cook. (the goal of all us dishwashers. But they only promoted me).
I was making $2.65 an hour.
When I first got hired I didn’t have a car so I took the bus there. But I got off work at 10:00 or 11:00 pm and the buses didn’t run that late so I had to walk 4 miles back to my home. I used to hitchhike but it was hard to get a ride that late at night. But sometimes I got lucky.
This ties in with schizophrenia because I was almost definitely in my pro-domal stage.
My first job in my life was at a fish shop at 16. Just a month after I quit high school. I hated school so much but I had no idea what else to do. One thing I could’ve done differently was stop going to school much earlier and learn on my own. I don’t think my parents wouldn’t allow me to but it would’ve been worth fighting for it. At least I could’ve freed myself from the stress of all the fuss at school.
After the first job I went downhill.
22 years later I finally found a good med and am enjoying my life now but have no job and want to find a way out.
Hi 77nick77. Nothing unusual in your first job that would possibly induce schizophrenia except you were excited to get promoted and got off work late at night.
