And we won. I suspect that’s why my benefits are higher than most. He brought up I wasn’t doing my usual occupation I had before my Sz, and all my minimum wage jobs I had that I would keep maybe a couple months at
most and then file unemployment for a while until someone would try hiring me again. I guess I couldn’t hold a steady job is another way of putting it. I worked full time from age 19 to when I was 35 and was fired. I didn’t get SSDI until I was 49.
I actually made it as a janitor and stock clerk for two years. I didn’t have to deal with customers much doing that job. Then they “promoted” me to a cashier, and I wasn’t any good at dealing with all the people.
I also worked as a dog groomer assistant at Petco for two years too. It’s not as hard dealing with dogs. I worked six days a week doing that job. I worked at a truck stop for a year as well. I was mostly dealing with adult men with that job.
I got mine through the normal process. It took several years though. Which actually turned out OK though, because I got back pay and it acted like a kind of savings account that built up all those years I went without. I worked about 25 or 26 years. From 16 until 41 or 42.
I guess I’m thinking about maybe trying to work again.
I consider it off and on myself. I really dont need the money atm though.
Thanks @Bowens I had a weekend job at a pet store when I was 14. Arkansas allowed under 16 to work after school and weekends for 20 or less hours a week. At 16 you could drop out of school and work any hours in any job you wanted and can do. I stayed in school and one year of college working my weekend job though.
I’m glad you don’t need the money. I’m getting to where I do.
I just turned 63 and can draw my Bank of America private pension when I turn 65. If I’m single it won’t put me over the 35k income limit of my current apartment building.
I think I got my disability pension on the third or fourth application.
It was incredibly stressful for me when they turned me down first few times.
So thankful I got it.
It probably would not hurt for me to save more for my future though. I won’t be in the position I am forever. Eventually parents will die and I will get more bills and have to pay for unexpected expenses and whatnot. This is why I am trying to save as much as possible while I can. A job would not hurt. IDK…Like I said. I go back and forth on it.
The only kicker is with SSDI they limit how much you can make. You can marry someone who makes a million dollars working and not lose your benefits though. I called and asked Social Security if I would lose my benefits if I got married.
