Cannabis Use when you have Schizophrenia - the Negative Problems and Impacts

Continuing the discussion from We need a chat room (instant messaging):

Some Additional Studies that have been completed on this issue of ongoing cannabis consumption:

Cannabis use after illness onset and poor insight were the best predictors of relapse. Being male and severity of negative symptoms at baseline predicted worse functioning at two years.

If we have a chat room then words can fly and fill the chat room but anyone who is desperate to find something from someone may eventually get it…

@daquilamarguerite some more recent research on this topic:

Increased risk of suicide:

> The greatest suicide risk was found during the month before and 2 months after first contact with psychiatric services (i.e., ‘early’ attempts). Severity of depressive symptoms and cannabis use emerged as predominant risk factors across time

and

> Nine prospective longitudinal studies in the generalpopulation have shown that cannabis use is associated with a two-fold increase in the risk of psychotic disorders, particularly schizophrenia, compared to controls. The risk of psychosis increases in a dose-related fashion. A higher risk of schizophrenia is predicted by earlier onset of cannabis use. The effects of cannabis are exerted primarily through THC interaction with cannabinoid (CB) 1 receptors in the brain. Cannabis exposure may disrupt the last steps of brain maturation, through the endocannabinoid system, thereby increasing the risk of psychosis during adolescence.

“Overall, evidence from epidemiologic studies provides strong enough evidence to warrant a public health message that cannabis use can increase the risk of psychotic disorders.”

and another study:

"A past history of Cannabis Use Disorder may be associated with notable differences in hippocampal morphology and EM impairments among adults with and without schizophrenia. Although the results may be compatible with a causal hypothesis, we must consider that the observed cannabis-related shape differences in the hippocampus could also be explained as biomarkers of a neurobiological susceptibility to poor memory or the effects of cannabis.

Yeah in my opinion if you have psychotic symptoms in any form, marijuana should be avoided like the plague. Not worth the risk.

I don’t think the picture is totally white or totally black. Some people with sz (not many) probably do benefit from smoking weed. But I think for almost everyone, smoking weed regularly makes it difficult to solve your emotional problems and difficult to get stuff done.

I still get confused using this forum LOL! It’s definitely my favorite and in my opinion the best of all the sites I’ve been using. Anyway, I thought I was sending a message to you but I guess I created a new topic? It’s called cannabis use. Sorry about that. Have you seen it anywhere yet? How would I send you a private message if I wanted to?

Most people know from the first period of experimenting if weed is their thing whether the are sz or just the average nutcase and if that person can’t figure it out on their own then hard wiring is waay off and they obviously need more than just medication.

Threads like this are negative and instigating a negative view of weed in general but considering that this site promotes synthetic medication almost religiously thats no surprise.

I medicate with weed and it’s the only way that I feel normal,BUT im not someone thats predisposed to negative symptoms due to weed use.

I think that if you did a in depth investigation on individual sz people that have negative symptoms due to weed use you’d find that people that are that far off kilter also have negative symptoms from thing’s like caffeine ,sugar ,nicotine etc.

Im a crazy so my theories are obviously questionable but people that use weed an a regular basis are also some of the calmist rational people that I’ve ever met.

Im thinking that the world is going crazy now but most instances of violence and other acts detrimental to the functionality of a community are committed by people that aren’t regular weed users…theres got to be a correlation there.

Take it from me, I’ve devoted the past three years seeking out a ‘doable’ marijuana regimen. although I have had some success with cbd, I inevitably fall off the cbd wagon by incorporating excessive thc use. I’ve had enough! I have 5 days sober as of today and I pray this time around I won’t go back to using. The allure is so powerful for me; I tend to dissociate and become manic, states that are somewhat euphoric. but when you weigh the pros and cons, there is no comparison. a life without marijuana is where I hope to be. I’ll wait for big pharma to unveil cbd in pill form, but until then, MA (marijuana anonymous) meetings and strict sobriety.

You couldn’t pay me to smoke that funk. I believe it is healthy for some but not me. I haven’t smoked herb in about 18 years . I’m not perfect but I believe I’m better off without pot and booze

3 WHOLE YEARS WHERE YOU From?

When I smoked… eventually it was hard to tell if the lack of motivation was from pot or Sz…

It would really spike up the paranoia… but that high feeling faded and so I had all the crash… with none of the fun…

But old habits are hard to break.

It was when I was in a deep negative swing when I tried to commit suicide. Then when I got life a little straightened out after that… I stupidly tried the pot again … head circus and huge delusions.

My high times are over… There is NO way I could stay med compliant… keep my job and study if I smoked pot again.

I’m a schizophrenic and addicted to marihuana, which makes me feel awful. I haven’t smoked any marihuana since 1979, but I handled some of the new stuff recently and found myself high for a hour or so.

J.

This thread interests me. My sz partner smokes it. I wonder if it is doing him any good. (My partner refuses to get treatment and won’t take meds properly) the only thing I know for sure is that without it his anger is 100 times worse.

Pot and negative communications in your mind is not a good thing.

It would be like getting high with toby from paranormal activity really. Think of how much fun that would be.

Probably mostly withdrawals. Pot withdrawals make you irritable. Being high on it makes you mellow.
