ZombieMombie's Red Slaw

Yeeeeehaaaaw, y’all!

I’m fixin’ to make a slaw from my youth. It’s real popular in North Carolina, where I grew up and lived until I was 24.

I’m sharing the recipe, mainly for Ms @Loke because she was talking about chow chow. This is a bit similar. Make it as hot as you wish and use like a relish. It is nothing like regular coleslaw.

Red Slaw

1 whole green cabbage, chopped fine
1 small onion, chopped fine
2 carrots, chopped fine
1/2 cup ketchup
1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 teaspoon bbq seasoning
OR
2 tsp bbq sauce
1 tsp hot sauce (any you like, adjust to your heat preference)
2 tblsp Sugar OR Splenda ( no stevia!)

Mix all veggies in a large bowl.

Mix the condiments, seasoning, sweetner, and vinegar in a small bowl. Pour over the veggies and mix well.

Pack into jars and store in the fridge.

I was asking @Loke about chow chow. It’s big here in SC. My dad and his people are from NC but I’ve never tried this slaw. It sounds really good though.

Oh yeah…they also like slaw on their hotdogs.

Oh yeah. Chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. Carolina classic.

I thought they were made that way everywhere and got a shock when I ordered one that way in NY and was told they don’t do that.

I love NY hotdogs though. In WV we make our hot dogs with slaw, chili, mustard and onions. I prefer WV hot dogs.

That’s cool !! I forgot that sometimes I just put cheese and hot sauce on my hot dogs. They’re actually good that way.

@anon4362788. If I’m able to get to the store I’m definitely gonna try to make your slaw. I figure my dad would love it. It’s a SC thing?

@Loke When my Yankee husband first had a slaw dog, he enjoyed the heck out of it and kept talking about how good it was.

I also make homemade coleslaw.

Chop a head of cabbage small, but not super fine. Toss in about a half cup Duke’s mayo, a table spoon or two of white vinegar, and 1/3 cup sugar. Mix well. Serve cold.

Oh and no, it’s an NC thing.

Sorry. I’m so goofy :upside_down_face:. You said you grew up in NC!! That’s how crappy my memory is !!!

Your coleslaw looks yummy too.

It’s my great grandma’s recipe. Almost everything from my old recipes are from her or her daughter.
