the silent movie of Dracula… when I was little I screamed when Dracula rose up out of his coffin…seemed like magic… I mean it is movie magic I guess but that was the first time cinema made me jump in delight… plus its one of the original horror movies inspiring all that came after…
evil deads… its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum…and im all out of gum… wonderfully bad one liners…stupid violence… I like em…
john dies at the end… hilarious and good story…
I couldn’t pick just one and I have many many more but these 3 stick out…what are your favorites… I have problems watching modern serious horror movies because I can pick sometimes whole scenes apart and know what older horror movie they pretty much just stole a whole scene or idea from…
aw tv shows…
original twilight zone… you know how hard I laughed when the world ended and the guy finally had time for his books and then the dumbass breaks his glasses… holy thunder its a good series…
Alfred Hitchcock presents… its very good also a huge influencer… the story telling styles has been hijacked by many modern directors…
z-nation… if you ever played fallout… there is always a weird wasteland perk… the walking dead is like fallout on normal z nation is like weird wasteland fallout… I find it hilarious and the chars very enjoyable…
Pan’s Labyrinth
The Host
Let the Right One In
Only Lovers Left Alive
Horror movies tend to do something nasty to my thought processes, so I only watch those that have been recced to me by someone I trust as exceptionally beautiful or thoughtful or clever.
the only horror movie I have seen recently is my life its somewhat bloody and changes a lot but no killing and its not that scary it just sucks because there is no good scenes it is all terrible and it feels like its never going to end
I have the same issue… the horror genre is full of garbage… so finding the rare gems is rather challenging… @Rhubot also I cant recall seeing any of those, is pans labyrinth actual about pan and a labyrinth? and has nothing to do with the slightly creepy kids movie… jim hensons labyrinth?
I believe that would be more of a drama…lol… im sorry life sucks sometimes…sometimes its beautiful though… hold onto those moments and let the bull■■■■ fall away…
Pan’s Labyrinth is about a faun and a labyrinth, but he’s not specified to be Pan in the movie. It’s mainly about a young girl with a brutal stepfather in Franco’s Spain, and about how severe trauma can blur the boundaries of reality. Quite possibly triggering!
The Host is Korean and absolutely hilarious. It’s a straight-up monster flick, about a US Army base dumping chemicals into the Han River and creating a monster.
Let the Right One In and Only Lovers Left Alive are both vampire movies, the first one being eerier and more horror-y and the second being like the most romantic movie ever made, about two vampires still in love with each other after hundreds of years, and what you live for when you’re going to live forever.
A couple that I haven’t seen that I do want to see: Drag Me to Hell, It Follows, and The Babadook.
babadook… has the most clever of books… I enjoyed the handcrafted babadook dr sues book more than the movie to be honest… may be triggering paranormal extra dimensions psychological and awesome visual aid use of a book…
all those sound pretty good… the love story part is iffy… if the love story is genuine and story driving I will allow it… but if its tacked on because they think every story should have some kinda love interest angel… it just feels like a waste of camera time… but those vamp ones sound aight… I will def watch pans movie though…
I love subtitles… id rather read than hear them talk I feel like I understand it better if I read it…
I like almost any horror movie by Guillermo del Toro. Pan’s Labyrinth especially (not sure if that’s actually horror or just fantasy thriller) but his others are good too. I love them because he mixes fantasy with horror, so there is a lot of beauty and magic and awe mixed with terror. There’s always some sort of heartfelt feelings in them.
The Grudge. I haven’t seen it in a while but when I saw it as a kid it scared me more than any movie I’ve ever seen I was paranoid for weeks. She was just such a scary monster to me, how she could come out of anywhere even walls. And the noise she made…ugh.
The Exorcist. Started really slow but it was another really scary one I could barely keep my eyes open to watch. Pretty good overall. The book was excellent too and I’d recommend it.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose. I haven’t seen it in quite a while now but I remember it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, it just had good story flow and I had sympathy for the character.
The Awakening. I liked the characters and the story and plot were interesting.
Shutter Island. Really good, the mystery keeps you wondering through the whole movie.
Human Centipede 2. Incredibly disturbing in all the right ways. Very well done. I was honestly surprised at how good it was given that the first one was so terrible.
13 Ghosts. I loved learning about all the ghosts and their backstories. Plus there was one scene where a girl was fixing her hair in the mirror and one of the ghosts is walking up behind her but you can’t see it in the reflection. That one had me looking over my shoulder in the bathroom for some time.
Insidious. The art and costumes were so pretty and the movie was funky and cool. Sadly the sequels were laughably bad.
The Babadook. Very well done. Very human and realistic characters.
The Cell. Its not officially classified as horror I don’t think but it has a LOT of horror elements. Really interesting plot and gorgeous cinematography.
The original Poltergeist. One of those movies where you hurt for the characters and just want their struggle to be over. The old lady medium really made the movie, she hoped the creepy factor by a lot. The remake wasn’t the same without her.
Orphan. The little girl actress was amazing. One of the best child actresses I’ve seen, in a horror movie especially.
Sixth Sense. It’s just a classic.
The Resident. Good stalker movie. Plus I have a mini crush on the bad guy in that one Heh
That’s all I can think of for now. I’ve seen so many that I’m sure I’m forgetting one or two. I haven’t seen many horror tv shows. I love Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story and Supernatural. Bates Motel was pretty good. Twilight Zone is a classic as well.
It Follows was decent. It didn’t really appeal to me a whole lot but it held its own and wasn’t just another one of the million junky horror movies they churn out nowadays.
Yeah the love story one is - it’s weird. They’re the ultimate old married couple. There really isn’t a love story to it, like that isn’t the plot at all. The plot is that one is sick of living, and also they’re having trouble sourcing blood lately. The fact that they’re crazy about each other just kind of is - it’s romantic because you know they’ve been together forever but still care passionately about each other. No plot, just characterization.
It’s a Jim Jarmusch film, very meandering and strange and cerebral. My co-person and I love it, we want to be whiny self-indulgent mopey sloppy vampires still in love 500 years from now. My sister hates the movie, because nothing happens. They just are depressed and collect guitars and hang out in crumbly old houses.
Let the Right One In is Swedish, Pan’s Labyrinth is Mexican. I realized after I posted that Only Lovers Left Alive was the only one in English. I like subtitles, too, really like listening to movies and music in foreign languages. I find it soothing.
Is maybe my favorite movie ever. It’s so beautiful and strange and says such sad, relatable things about trauma and survival. I can’t watch it often because it messes me up.
I liked the movies by Rob zombie, “house of 1000 corpses” and “devils rejects”. I also liked “the hills have eyes” remake, and “the last house on the left.” My wife doesn’t like horror movies, so I haven’t seen a new one in years.
Edit: I really want to see “get out”, although I’m not sure if that counts or not, as I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard good things about it.
ive watched the vampires collecting guitars movie… it was done well I would watch it again… it was very genuine and I would watch more stories from within the same universe so to speak…
I have watched so many Chinese films… ill watch a movie from anywhere but china puts out twisted kung fu epics the story telling is top notch and they don’t mind letting the bad guy or no one win… anyway ive watched so many Chinese films kung fu and otherwise that some nights I have dreams where the dialog is Chinese instead of English… and I too love music from foreign places it seems less stressful if I cannot at will understand the lyrics… it ads a depth to the experience… the words become ideas and feelings on a much more personal level essentially you get to write your own lyrics and meanings to foreign songs you enjoy…
well now you know what I think makes a super romantic movie
I’m crazy about Chinese and Hong Kong movies too, wu xia or otherwise. My favorite actor is Tony Leung Chiu Wai who mainly does straight drama but was in Hero, which maybe you’ve seen?
hmm the cat and the fox both like Chinese drama kung fu or other wise… of course ive seen hero the film style was epic with wonderfully thought out locations and camera work… at first I liked jet li more than Jackie chan… then I watched Jackie chan in a couple Chinese epics… but then I watched the a few of jet li’s epics…and now im unsure who is more…epic…
oh ive been meaning to tell you about a Chinese show ive been watching lately… ice fantasy on netflix… I was going to tell you about it because of the obvious harry potter influence in the first episode… but now I know you like Chinese drama its like harry potter lord of the rings ang game of thrones plus a little twilight were re written by tsun su… and im 5 episodes in I cant tell if its genius or if I just want it to be genius… if nothing else the references from the various fantasy movies is enjoyable to look for… have you seen this?
You should watch his other movies too! Like Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Mama. They aren’t as good as Pans but have similar themes and are also lovely movies.
