When I was a smoker people sometimes “stole” other peoples lighters. It wasn’t out of malevolence. Just habit to light your smoke and put the lighter in your pocket. I lost a lot of lighters that way, I’d hand it to my buddy then forget about it, and vice versa.
If you don’t have a lighter a couple alternatives are to turn on the stove until the burner is red hot or plug in the toaster until the inside wires are red hot.
I quit 13 years ago so I don’t have this problem anymore.
