Who else here has anhedonia? (inability to experience pleasure)

I have a hard time enjoying pretty much everything I use to. TV, Video Games, Movies. I have an extremely hard time getting into them since Sz.

It makes for a very boring existence. I do think I’m improving slightly because I do get the occasional giggle from the forum now and then, but I still miss being able to enjoy the things a normal person enjoys.

Do you think it’s the schizophrenia or the meds or a combination of them that causes it?

If I had to guess, I would say it is a combination of the two. :butterfly::butterfly::butterfly:

When I was going through Ativan withdrawal I experinced Anhedonia. Once I got over the withdrawal I started feeling pleasure from things again.

Not to badger you with questions but…Do you happen to have Diabetes? I read something recently that also linked high blood sugar to anhedonia. I have diabetes also so…

I think my anhedonia is from sz and is strongly related to avolition.

It is no problem. But no, I don’t have diabetes. :turtle::turtle::turtle:

I think anhedonia is caused by a lack of dopamine as dopamine is known to be responsible for pleasure and euphoria, most street drugs induce artificial pleasure by increasing dopamine so its addictive.

By that logic you would have to conclude that the meds have something to do with it though right?

Both the meds and sz. My psychiatrist told me that sz lowers dopamine in some brain parts which causes negative symptoms. I experienced negative symptoms 2yrs before being diagnosed with sz.

Ldopa fixed my anhedonia and avolition but it worsened positive symptoms. Its similar to Ritalin and Adderall (Amphetamine) as it increases dopamine function.

Ldopa is addictive too just like stimulants. I experienced withdrawals after taking it like feeling cold, shivering and wanting more and more.

Some days I am so tempted to try going off meds to try to fix these issues…

Even if you dont experience positive symptoms off meds you might still have some negative symptoms from sz itself.

The thought of living with anhedonia the rest of my life makes me ill.

Its still a mystery why some patients dont experience negative symptoms from sz or meds. I guess bcz we have different brains and different brain chemistry.

I made a thread about stimulants and two users improved their negative symptoms with Ritalin but they later relapsed into psychosis after like 6 months.

Yea I have a defective brain, the only cure for my negative symptoms worsens my positive symptoms.

I still have hope that someday I will be able to try getting off meds after being stable for years and the anhedonia will either lessen or disappear. I dunno though.
