What's the saddest case of mental illness you've encountered?

I remember in my last hospitalization there was this married couple in their 80s. They had been married over 60 years. One of them had a chronic health problem that was going to claim their life within 6 months. They concocted a plan to mutually kill each other so they could always be together. They couldn’t stand the thought of living without each other. I’ll never forget that. I was so touched and moved by that, when they shared their story on the first morning of their admission, I bawled like a baby, moved beyond words.

Few years ago, there was a guy in my town that would stand at the same spot every day, for a couple of hours, making strangely moves with his fingers and talking silently to himself. Every day, same place, same moves.
He looked like he wasn’t taken care of for a long time. It was very sad and disturbing.
I didn’t see him for a months - hope he is in better place now.

This homeless man that used to sleep and basically lived there for years near an apartment I shared. He talked to his dead wife and saw her, story goes that the wife died in a car crash there and he had a psychotic break when she died, went to the spot and died there one winter. Still think about him often. We gave him blankets and food, he didn’t talk to anyone, just to his dead wife.

There was this homeless women who would always sit by the road outside of a wawa (gas station). She didn’t say anything and no one bothered her, she just stared into the streets. I sometimes brought her a bottle of water when i went into the gas station. She didn’t really acknowledge me didn’t say anything but i think she appreciated it.

I dedicated my book to Tony Coronado. Tony took his life while delusional, doesn’t get much sadder than that for me. Tony was a friend of mine.

Ther was a man who was actually a a great architect. He helped desighn a good third of the commercial buildings in my county. One day he sent his family to vacation. He couldn’t go because of work. But on the qay back from their vacation, his family got into a terrible car accident and they all died; his wife, his 2 daughters and son. After he got so depressed that he stopped working completely and went homless. His brother took care of him for some time until he died in a car accident too. He reduses to get in cars to this day.The last time i saw him he was sleeping under a bridge. I haven’t seen him in a while though. Hope he’s alright.
