What's a saying people say that you think is complete bullsh-it?

As above. People have all kinds of sayings…but are all of them accurate?

“love means never having to say you’re sorry”. I think love means you have to apologize constantly for your behavior :stuck_out_tongue:

“It’s all good”

I hate that phrase and you normally hear it when maybe things aren’t all that good potentially.

“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
What if I’m too tired to make lemonade?

“Practice makes perfect.”
There are a lot of things, like art and writing, that can’t be perfected, because they’re subjective.

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger."
A lot stressors/events make me feel worn down, and weaker.

I hate that saying too!! It’s so dumb and devoid of any deep meaning or philosophy.

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!

Yeah right!

Not really a saying but:

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”

It’s interesting but also complete BS. If you’re healthy, you’re better able to adjust even to a ■■■■■■ up society.

“There is no such thing as a free lunch”

There is, actually. Lots of things can be free and have no hidden costs. Libertarians seem to love this phrase.

“So put that in your pipe and smoke it.”

I don’t know if it’s just a Southern thing.

Never liked it.

Naw, I’ve heard it here in the midwest too. Yeah, that saying really doesn’t make any sense .

It’s a statement about economics. Someone will pay for the lunch. If you skip out on the bill the lunch may be free for you but the restaurant has to cover the cost so it wasn’t “free”. At the end of the day someone somewhere ends up paying for it.

Here in Canada everyone says we have free healthcare, but it’s not free, it’s paid for through our taxes. I prefer our healthcare system over some other counties but from an academic point of view, if you study economics in school, there really is no such thing as a free, that’s why libertarians, conservatives and capitalists say it all the time.

What about food pantry services donated to a church or other non profit?

Oh give me a break. If I get something someone was about to throw away, it’s free. If I go outside and pick a wild apple, it’s free. Take your libertarian views about economics to someone else.

It’s known as “opportunity cost”. Your giving up the money you could make in paid labour working for free, so it’s really not free, you’ve lost your time. They say in economics there are only trade offs

Bringing up opportunity costs is really stretching this thing as far as you can get it. It’s not relevant. It’s just a meaningless zero sum game economics argument.

Tons of things in life are free. There’s no convincing yourself out of that fact.
