I remember growing up with the dumb blonde stereotype but they didn’t create a million sitcoms and commercials and ideology around it. It was just a cliche portrayed sparingly, right?
Yeah, Peter Griffin and Randy Marsh are as dumb as they get
I’ve only ever met one female that dumb. Loads of guys that dumb. Sometimes there is a basis for a stereotype.
Stereotypes have shifted all over the place. Its just that targeting men is safer these days. It used to be safe to target minorities and women or the obese or LGBTQ. Now its more safe to target men.
Its just more politically correct.
Dont get me wrong. Im not complaining. I dont really give a rats as what some commercial or tv show does. But this is the reality. If you want to be politically correct, you do not target minorities or women.
Of course, this is only with those that are concerned with being politically correct. I am in no way saying that minorities and women are not still targeted by some. Just that its not politically correct and will not likely fly as comedy on a commercial as easily.
Never saw All In the Family, I take it? Hardly sparingly.
Lol 15 characters
Edith became more assertive as the seasons went on. She stood up to Archie over and over. She did have sort of a “ditzy” style, but she was intelligent. The episode where she was sexually assaulted had more than 40 million viewers, nearly as many people who had watched the Super Bowl that year.
Here she is slapping Archie in the face due to his gambling after he had told her he wouldn’t gamble anymore:
It was good they gave her depth as the series progressed. Series 1… Oof.
I think this show is the inspiration for Married With Children and The Simpsons, et al. It takes the worst of us and throws it back in our face.
“See that? It’s wrong. Stop it.”
Most od the “idiot dad” stereotype sitcoms are also sitcoms that target minorities and women and the obese and LGBTQ people. It’s just that a certain style of humor relies on unflattering but expected stereotypes so the audience knows exactly what they’ll be getting when they watch.
