Dune is written easier to read, but LOTR really set the stage for all fantasy and in my opinion is a bit better. But I love both, and currently reading the second Dune book again because I just got the third one: Children of Dune.

I believe you should alternate, reading one sentence of each book at a time.
This will provide you with a unique story of a young hobbit who accepts stewardship of a desert planet and must transport the one ring to have it destroyed in the fires of mount doom, which are protected by a dark lord who has extended his life through a spice/drug that only your planet provides.
lol. I hope I got the part of the plot of dune right there. I have never read the book or seen the movie. Only going based on what I’ve heard and read.
