I think basically you need someone who has a good understanding of mental illness. Yes shockingly there are mental health professionals that do not.

Ideally, you have someone
-Who is well experienced with your illness specifically, and knows the current therapies recommended for it
-Who has some form of open communication, like email, text and app or whatever so that they can help you keep track of issues experienced during the week you may not remember to bring up during session
-That you feel comfortable talking to

And personally I prefer people who aren’t too outwardly emotional/empathetic and stay professional. I hate being pitied and when it looks my therapist is going to cry from what I said it makes me feel uncomfortable.

Being open minded and assertive and a reasonable degree of empathy

Empathy and not co dependent. Smart too. Not looking for clients as a revolving door.

Someone with a degree from a well known school. Not that online ■■■■■■■■ looking for the easy way out, looking for a buck.

Rapport, education and professionalism. The same that it takes for any other profession.

  1. Hard worker 2) Really loving what you do, if you don’t love it, it is not worth the hassle.

I don’t believe a therapist would help me but others here have been helped.

Kindness, sympathy, understanding of mental illness, understanding of boundaries. They have to Realize they aren’t infallible. And they have to treat me like a person.

Apparently my criteria is almost impossible cause I had to go to 13 therapists before I found the right one.

Oh and last criteria!!! doesn’t sympathize with my abuser cause thats really ■■■■■■■ hard to find.

My personal criteria:

  • Professionally sympathetic (meaning they maintain emotional distance but recognize your feelings and provide emotional comfort)
  • Goal or action orientation (gives tools for success and action plans)
  • Easier to talk to (e.g., open lines of communication)
