What do you people think of my country

I went to South Africa for three weeks with my school when I was fifteen, starting in Cape town ending in Johannesburg. We spent so much time amongst nature and we experienced some dodgy behaviour in port Elizabeth and some markets but I remember that holiday like a life saver. I remember standing at the edge of the Blyde river canyon and thinking I could take on the world (was prodromal with anxiety and depression for months) It was one of the last times I could be truly happy and I remember the whole place was amazing the music and the people and the scenery. It blew me away I say with pride that I have been there. I would love to go back but I probably won’t because I wouldn’t want my feelings to change or ill wish my future, my uncle committed suicide three days after I got back, it all went down hill from there, but I always had that memory standing on the edge of the canyon with the wind blowing, sun warming my face to remind me of the light. I owe many years of life to your country

my hairdresser fled South Africa as it was too dangerous, she was beaten with a gun and robbed and burgled, the Africans hate the white people and kill them all the time bc of apartheid,

Well… tbh that’s nice and how things should be realistically but everyone I talk to has a low opinion of the United States. Maybe not the American people in general but the American government, the president, the military, the police, ect ect.

Yeah that’s what I thought, unfortunately

@anon20318121 - This list of Cape Town foods looks delicious. Do you recommend anything here?

Hi I’m from south africa

Personally I really don’t know much about it, other than what we learned about the apartheid in school. Also die antwoord is from there and some people like their music here. Going off stereotypes & opinions I’ve seen posted on the internet I guess here it is considered to be one of the more ā€œcivilizedā€ African countries i.e. more modernized and less war-torn/tribalistic than other African countries. (Though I thought I remembered reading that there has been political strife there lately? I dunno don’t remember) It’s been joked/implied that white people from South Africa aren’t true Africans.

Unfortunately many here do not have high views of countries in Africa. Basically seeing them as a hot mess and primitive, in need of help from more ā€œadvancedā€ countries.

@anon20318121 I know little about South Africa. Mandela, and the best country in Africa. I guess South Africa is a bit like Chinese. Both are in economic and social development. But I don’t know how ambitious the people of South Africa are. I know most Chinese people here are very keen on securing a good position in the world for China. But what I see is a large proportion of the Chinese population are quite ignorant as the result of the bad political system. I mean they may have good skills of making computers or even making robots, but they have little knowlege of how to build up a good political system to secure the happiness of the people.

I like the movies Invictus and District 9. I know of Nelson Mandela. I have always wanted to visit.

Yay for South Africa! :slightly_smiling_face: We love you South Africa! Stay strong! You’re beautiful! :sun_with_face:

I’m from the UK
i travelled on my own to johannesburg, Lesotho and Kreuger.

I stayed with a very loud African’s family with 5 kids and went to townships with them as well as a hitler type club where i was against my will given a secret handshake.
A family picked me up off the streets in Ficksberg with 2 huge suitcases. I was chubby and with no sun tan and no sense.

Then i met a half Indian half Malaysian in Cape Town - offering a chauffeur service - he took me to stay with his family for a few days
but he was a gigolo basically and we travelled for about 3 months… we went to back to Johannesburg, a crack den, a club or two, played a lot of pool ate out a lot. I was mostly vegan and would only eat rice and pickle and to Swaziland, Maputo, Namibian semi desert, Sossuvlei, Walvis bay, the garden route from port Elizabeth through Coffee Bay and Transkye not in that order.a lot of the time the most obvious places to stay were top hotels, i was on my mum’s credit card the exchange rate was phenomenal… nothing was out of reach really,

3 months was long enough to get the place i felt, and I will never forget it
it is the most beautiful country I have ever been to (or different would be northern Norway - ice and snow right down to the beaches and rocks)

I just can’t believe how good life must be there for some - the fact that you don’t have to spend 90% of your time indoors has me wanting to move there.

in the uk we are indoors too much - and would be all the time if we didn’t go out in the rain and freezing storms etc

sorry for all the cliche

America is not special despite how much people want to believe it is. It has problems like every other country.

sorry - i think get the place sounded so wrong there in that context of being able to stay in these beautiful places.

i just know every european i have ever seen is fat, there is poverty which i don’t think i would understand
devision.

loud people who don’t give a ā– ā– ā– ā–  and a guy i fell in love with who was caring enough to have dreams about not being able to take care of me

No where I would rather live but it does scare me - as i have heard all about how dangerous…

We all believe America is great coming from third world countries.

If i could choose one place to live it would be somewhere in the states

@anon20318121 Immigration has it’s own problems as it is those who are unfortunate that migrate. Those in power or are living somewhat of decent life stay in their home country.

I could get into this more but it will get political. So for the sake of this thread, I’ll keep it on the down low. Just know a lot of the problems the African countries have are from American businesses, otherwise they would be growing in prosperity by now and much more than the USA would have. China was the exception.

@anon1571434 China has a different method to promote prosperity in African countries. Building road & rail infrastructure is one. Constructing the African Union headquarters is another. But there is downside such as Chinese buying ivory from poached animals like rhinos & elephants.

Africa has a lot of rich resources that the Chinese could buy in the future and I’m sure this is where the infrastructure development is leading.
