what do the genral public think of the words schizophrenia and psychosis

They probably think horror movie scenarios. Oh no the psychotic serial killer broke free from the asylum. Something like that.

Always got the impression the general public think SZ is a split personalty. Multiple personality disorder (MPD) or Dissociative identity disorder (DID) as it’s now called.

When I talk to people about it, they usually have no clue what I’m talking about so I get to tell them about schizophrenia the way I want to with the connotation I think is appropriate. Thankful for a failure in their education to be honest. I’m yet to run into someone who already has enough knowledge to think they know enough and form a bias.

I don’t know what the general public thinks. By news and other sources, I could guess it’s a very nervous word.

But the people I know who know me… they don’t understand, but no one has run away in fear.

Their eyes get real big, their mouth contorts with soundless angony, their fear stinks the whole room they’re in, and then their feet start back- peddling with the speed of a bear on fire.

You might hear some studdering words that sounds something like: “stay away you!”

That’s similar to my experience. This also makes me not worry too much about stigma, if I can tell the people I want to what has happened or is still happening in a coherent way, I will be their primal impression of this illness. If I can show that I can still act pretty normally and do stuff that I used to do they won’t be too frightened by it. What I did notice though is that the symptoms traditionally conceived as ‘incomprensible’ such as hallucinations, intrusive thoughts and delusions, are generally a lot easier to empathize with for others than the negative symptoms are. I understand though, for it is really difficult to try and help someone with negative/depressive symptoms. I myself would come up with things like ‘try and do this and this’ - which is exactly what has become impossible if the symptoms are severe enough, and that’s why such comments make for a feeling of not being understood. My friends were quite interested in my voices and we used to make fun of them while I was hallucinating, that was such a relief and quite empowering. I do notice I tend to rush through things in explaining to people now, since ive told the story so many times. I need to pay more attention to this for it can be quite shocking to hear such a thing, to make the good impression I want I need to take a bit more time than I have the last couple of times I told someone new for the first time.

Im convinced that in the near future, there wont be any stigma…**

Tried it once. Wouldn’t do it again. I told a girl I’m friends with once and her eyes started welling up.

Instead I am a “free spirit”

Really … they don’t think.

I’m reading a huge stack of APA articles about this for my thesis tomorrow. I will get back to you with an empirically supported answer by Monday.

Science. Technology. Is it good or is it whack?

I don’t know. It never comes up in my life.

Thinking about it probably mostly ignorance. A few years ago I wanted to get more information and support dealing with my tinnitus. Which is a constant hissing or ringing in hearing. I was on a support site one poster posted how if he saw someone wearing a tin foil hat living under the bridge near by to him ie Mentally ill person. His thoughts where they where just suffering a extreme form of tinnitus. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

There are great science lectures on this topic. My understanding is sociopaths, psychopaths, are the psychotic killers and psychosis is more of a symptom of sz that is acted out but can be controlled not like the psychotic killer who are motivated by passion, jealousy and other things. Because the public does not understand it would be better to educate the public. We are not the “Naturall Born Killers” or “Psycho” these are made criminals. We have an illness like cancer

The link I posted is the delusions of psychosis and schizophrenia

Open the video on youtube and look at the first comment under it. That’s where a lot of people get schizophrenia wrong.
