Wellbutrin weight gain temporary?

Ive been on wellbutrin four weeks and gained 5 lbs due to overeating. This med is supposed to cause weight loss but so far today ive eaten a pint of ice cream and two tv dinners today and ive only been awake 5 hours! Im hoping its just a temporary effect. Did anyone else gain an appetite on wellbutrin? Nurse claims its because im feeling better im eating more.

You need to exercise self control. And also exercise! You can’t just rely on a pill to make you lose weight. Those are the hard facts. No easy way around it.

I asked about wellbutrin not for another lecture about excersize and self control.

Wellbutrin is to prevent depression, from google’s search result. How do you know it can cause weight loss?

yeah i know, but its something you bring up a lot on the forum. was just trying to help.

cheers

“This is a drug that is also used for some people who are clinically obese because it helps speed up their metabolism and gives them energy to do things. This drug also speeds up the metabolic system in your body – which will lead to increases in calories burned”"
It let you work out. You will not lose weight if you don’t work out.

I dont have energy to do â– â– â– â–  for working out. Also i think people who understand mental illness should be the first to understand that the meds give you binge eating disorder and its torture to starve yourself when you feel hungry all the. The problem is the meds make you hungry and slow your metabolism. I feel urges to eat all day and all i can think about is food if i dont eat.

And as far as lack of motivation goes if i had the energy to work out i would just go back to work and get off disability. I dont feel like doing anything because im so sedated on medication. Telling someone to eat less whose got increased appetite on meds is like telling a depressed person to just get over it.

Hunger is a form of pain. Who the â– â– â– â–  wants to feel paib all day. Sick of hearing this even the nurse says it. Plus the research shows dieting on meds barely worth it on the first place i might lose three lbs in exchange for lots of misery with cravings all day long

The hunger starts to back down if you can make it through the first week. Your body does adjust. You’re dealing with a form of addiction involving food. I wish there was a magic weight loss pill. There isn’t. Sometimes you either have to move more and eat less or resign yourself to living plus-sized.

Sorry, man. :frowning:

The hunger is caused by the meds it will not go away

I had that with Zyprexa. I was able to moderate the damage somewhat towards the end by getting rid of the high calorie, high carb foods. Are you able to stock your fridge with veggies?

I always end up throwing away veggies because i dont end up eating them

Thoughtfulness and physical exercise can help. Consider thinking, “Even though I’ve gained some weight, I won’t allow it to conflict with today’s goals.” And, exercise as little as a walk in the community.

I feel for you. Hoping you can get the med change you need.

It might cause a weight loss due to decreased appetite - and that fits under the side affects. For instance, wellbutrin didn’t change my appetite at all…( It happened with Zoloft for a short time)
You can binge more healthy on, say, porridge, strawberries, low fat yogurt, apples, and food for diabetics.

Stop buying junk food and start eating healthy, try eating foods that are high in protein an fiber they will fill u up and you won’t be hungry all the time.

Well, if you don’t have energy to work out, you can loss weight by diet. Like others’ post, eat healthy, fruit can also let you not feel hungry.
Another thing, I think you have some feelings about disability.

Binge eating is a real disorder and I do understand you @cactustomato. Advices like “eat healthy and exercise” are really like you tell the depressed person to get over it. You have to develop some strategy though if you want to change something - and really stop putting your hopes on pill because it won’t happen.
You can pick a day or two in week when you will eat whatever you want and rest of the week stick to the diet - that’s an advice from professional.
You can write a journal about what you plan to eat and what you have eaten.
You can go day by day and set yourself a goals like two days in a row without binging or such.
And there is a great online community with this particular disorder - you can check it out.
