Violence and SZ

I saw this article about a young girl with sz. http://goo.gl/VCt0SQ It makes me sad to see someone with untreated sz commit violence against another. Unfortunately I think it furthers the view of the general public that people with sz are dangerous (which most aren’t).

It’s sad really, and you’re right it perpetuates the stigma, but huffpost makes a lot of articles against stigma too. I think this is just a sad situation, poor kid. Glad he survived.

My experience with violence and SZ had to do with my own paranoia and my delusional thinking which caused me to assault a woman I had designs on out of an irrational fear for my life. The delusion was that she had set up what I thought was my rival to murder me. My attacking her was a “preemptive strike.” I struck her face repeatedly and broke her little finger on her right hand by clamping down on it with my teeth. This happened in a mental hospital. I wasn’t even admonished. Just put in a cold wet sheet pack and locked in my room. I normally am a gentle, reclusive type of person. I don’t like killing insects.

I’m surprised I never got violent with all the people I thought wanted to murder me while I was psychotic. Even when I had voices telling me to I would refuse.

no press is bad press

Yeah if u search schizophrenia u will see that it is associated w/ disordered behavior and this frequently takes the form of violence.

I think its kind of annoying how people throw around the term stigma whenever someone suggests that sz patients are more violent than the general population.

When i get intrusive thoughts they often tell me to do violent or socially deviant things.

Basically, I think this condition has the potential to cause a disturbed person to perpetuate violence against themself or someone else.

But most schizophrenics have the influence of negative symptoms to thank for their inability to get around to causing anyone any real harm. Most sz patients are satisfied to get on disability and basically just sit around and let life pass them by.

Thanks for this article. It’s a tragedy but it will help me to be just a little more careful and alert when I’m walking around by myself in my neighborhood. You never really know what’s behind friendly smiles and appearances from strangers and I will not be so quick to think some of the young people in my town are as innocent as they look. So thanks for the heads-up.

I saw this program about a white supremacist gang. They had to spill blood to get into the gang. So, for their initiation three of them went out and beat a homeless schizophrenic man to death with baseball bats. What a senseless thing to do. I hate senseless violence.

Senseless violence is the expression of inferiority. It is like bully, low confidence.

when i was psychotic on drugs at a party i was scared this girl was an undercover cop and i shoved her. thats the most violent ive ever been lol but still i would never do that if i wasnt in a psychotic panic

I have so little media in my life (radio, TV, movies, music) that I find any of the news stories about violence hard to believe. I live in a friendly little town where people have their mental health. I have avoided stories about violence because they play into a part of myself that likes violence. It encourages you to fear other people and avoid them.

I have gotten in a few fights cuz of sz. One was caused by bath-salts (synthetic drug) driving me str8 crazy. Another one when I smoked weed unmedicated. And another one driven by delusions alone.

Funny thing is I had never been in a fight in my entire life before.

Welcome to the forum.

Story on TV Tonight is a SZ doctor molesting his patients. Having a field day with the adds on. Media can be so biased and only interested in selling a story any story.

can u link? a doctor who has sz or psychiatrist?

This is the little I found on the net. In Australia so figure the show itself wont be much help to you.

You don’t mention the fact that sz’s are more likely to be victims of violence that normal people. There are people who have a radar that senses someone they think is vulnerable. Then, if they get called on the violence they can say the sz instigated it.

I think it comes down to a question of balance. Media exaggeration-no, but also vehement denial that people with sz can be violent-no.
The truth is a small percentage of people with psychosis/sz can be violent, and we need to accept that in order to learn how to put in place preventative measures.

During my last stay in psych hospital I hit a man who had been verbally tormenting me for months. This being done in front of staff who did nothing. It was an impulsive act and totally stupid as the other person was bigger and stronger than me. He beat my face black and blue.
He was treated with kid gloves and I ended up on a locked ward. Funnily enough although rather strict and regimented the locked ward was even better as the staff were fair and committed to the welfare of their patients.
I actually left the hospital for the last time from the closed ward.

Ill be totally honest Ive been in trouble with the law fighting and stuff ever since I was young. I was always like that it wasn’t my schizophrenia that made me do anything… I’m very well treated. But I look at myself in the mirror sometimes after a showdown and wonder like wtf kinda delusions am I putting into my head. but honestly Ive never been charged with assault. only small property crimes and I am always in self defense. my life is different ya know. makes ya wonder though what a “violent schizo attack is” is it ravaging madness?.. if so where in there had or to the other person. I don’t get it.
