part of me wants to sacrifice the 4, and become best friends with the 1 person i saved.
And what if it was your mistake that caused the situation in the first place? Would you also do nothing then?
Some of the variations to this problem show that the more personal the decision feels, the less likely we are to choose the option that kills fewer people. So in the variation where you have to push someone over a bridge onto the tracks to stop the trolley, a lot fewer people say they would do that. Because it feels more wrong to make a decision like this the more personal it becomes.
Another variation is that youâre inside a building far away, watching a live recording of this, and you have to push a button to make the trolley switch tracks. More people say they would do that.
He canât answer. He asked to be silenced for 2 months
I would switch it to the one person and run as fast as I can and grab the one person out of the way.
Iâve heard this scenario where the one person is someone important to you.
I would feel awful about it, but if it was someone super important to me I donât think I could sacrifice them for what would be considered the greater good. Like, if my kid was on the tracks (if I had kids) I donât know if any number of people on the other track could get me to save them.
I know that sounds incredibly selfish, but thatâs my answer.
There is no right answer to this messed up situation but if you switch the tracks youâll probably go to prison.
