The surprising benefits of mild paranoia – and how to keep it in check

Research over the past 20 years has revealed that paranoia isn’t restricted to a subset of the people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or similar conditions. Some researchers argue there is, in fact, a paranoia spectrum, and perhaps 1 in 6 of us may fall somewhere along it. Even more remarkably, the number of people prone to paranoid thoughts rose as covid-19 spread across the world.

I’d been dealing with mild paranoia for many years before my first episode. I used to see myself as cunning and aware of the many dangers looming around every corner and I’d even give practical advice to friends.

But maybe the transition from a utopic childhood to the harsh reality of cut throat grownup world made me like that, who knows.
