Everyone knows the stereotypes of what a schizophrenic is from a largely misguided and poor media coverage
Truth is there are a lot of us globally!
What is a quality you have that someone would not expect of you based on the public perception of the illness?

I am a very logical, I have two college degrees, I work and I am totally independent of my family.

I don’t know I just think somebody would see me as irrational because of a diagnosis of schizophrenia. But I do have a good quality of rationality and reasoning.

I am successful. That even defies stereotypes around here.

I think that turning it on its head that I think more about what other people are going through
Before all this happened I was pretty oblivious
But going through something like this I have found humbling and more understanding of what people go through more generally

Simple, I’m not delusional. For this reason I would never tell people I have the disorder. They all seem to think if you have it it means you are always delusional… because that’s the case with many other schizophrenics.

I don’t even know.
Like @agent101g said, I am not delusional.
I’m also pretty social. Or can be.
I don’t know if not being social is normally a stereotype though?

Even though it’s exhausting, I’m able to mask my symptoms and social awkwardness – at least in short stints. It’s how I got by at work.

People on disability are expected to be poor.

Outside, no one would know know I’m mentally ill.
I look very normal out. The only thing that gives me away is my arms that are filled with self harm scars from wrist to shoulder.
I have always had a “facade”, it’s called masking I guess.
I’m very far from the schizophrenic stereotype, but still, here we are.

That I cannot work under high pressure, high octane situations.
I work as a trader, and success/failure is always lurking at the corner. I live on the edge, which is not expected from someone with this illness.

Realising my delusions were as such really brought my world view crumbling down
But I am glad to have got past that
I can see why some may dig their heels in as I can be pretty stubborn as well
Just not worth the hassle
The hospitalisations stopped pretty soon after I just decided to shut up and tow the line

I think its north america where that expectation exists because they dont pay out much unfortunately. Long term disability is about 600 a month if i did it. It seems parts of europe have good disability plans and such. Jealous of that for sure!

Yeah. $600 is scandalous for a rich country.
How are people expected to pay for rent, food, hobbies, vacation etc?

It was $750/mth for me back in the day. Now it’s about $1,800. Sounds good until you realize that rent is $1,900.
They aren’t. No one cares, though.

I have dual way of presenting my self …
When I’m alone,I’m going through lot of sz.
When I prepare to go out,I tend to behave, look, and talk like normal person.
That confuses people like “and what’s wrong with him”…
Like Jekyl and Hide.
