The Feds Are Officially Cracking Down on Basement Biohackers

Part of me agrees… and part of me thinks they are being used to protect profit margins…

The FDA is the caring, transparent, and competent organisation that gave us thalidomide, quaaludes, close-hold embargoes, and skyrocketing drug approval costs. They can’t make self-experimentation illegal - a number of Nobel prizes that we know of have been given as the result of self-experimentation (H. pylori ulcer discovery, cardiac catheterisation, and polio vaccine come to mind). By hindering people from buying gene modification kits they will drive research underground which is more dangerous. The FDA clinical trials process is the reason few people invest in bold ideas. They should work on fixing that.

Wow dude… hah new age at-home organ replacement…

I actually support the notion of the do it yourselfs lamenizing the jargon.

However yeah in practice this is a very very very sensitive issue… I bet they consider that every day. Even a mild failure would be catastrophic and heartbreaking to the at home doctor at heart… Else you got the other neo-fascists with their whole “give em the clamps.” mentality… “THIS IS FOR SCIENCE BY GOD!”…

(psa note: Azley does not condone the at home practice of experimental medical procedures.)

They say they will throw “every law” at biohackers, but does anyone know if any laws actually exist to prevent people from experimenting on themselves?

â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– !!!

The state is for the people. The people control the state. It’s in the people’s best interest that the state punishes them for doing what they want with the state’s bodies. I mean their own bodies.

If there are no laws against this, I’m sure they can find a good reason to make some. And then pretend the people wanted them.

There’s a guy out there using CRISPR to fix genetic defects in dogs. The FDA says the dogs are medical devices, basically, and must be approved.

They can probably tie people up in court if they’re public about what they’re doing.

Can you imagine the US Congress making a useful law about genetic engineering? We have reps who believe the earth is 6,000 years old, that dinosaurs were contemporary with man, and think that islands might “tip over.” It’s fu.cking sad.
