Tell me about ADHD and how you are treated for it

My husband is thinking he has undiagnosed ADHD and I just wanted to know other people’s experiences and how they were treated by the doctor.

Thank you!

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in elementary school. They put me on a stimulant and it turned me into a zombie. My dad made me discontinue it and I haven’t had any treatment for it since

I was diagnosed at 14 and lost the diagnosis at 21, but it’s on the table again.

The key points are:

  • executive dysfunction: inability to plan, start, and stick to tasks.
  • lack of focus, easily distracted, but at the same time, sometimes focusing so intensely on something you don’t notice anything else.
  • restlessness
  • poor impulse control. Or should I say, increased impulse flow. So many wants and thoughts all at once all the time.
  • A persistent feeling of being understimulated and/or overstimulated.

And, here’s a screenashot from an adhd blog:

I have all these but I am not diagnosed with ADHD. Maybe its just sz negative symptoms for me.

Ritalin, Adderall, Strattera etc lots of ADHD meds. If your husband doesn’t have sz Dr will likely prescribe one of those but if he has sz no Dr will prescribe them as they will likely worsen psychosis. I want to try Strattera.

My husband has no history of psychosis or MI,

Well,

Other than this possible ADHD.

I’ve been on ritalin and concerta.
Concerta gave me tics which, although they have lessened, still persists.

So nothing treats ADHD except for uppers?

Not to be crude, but that’s what they are, right?

Oy vey.

He has high blood pressure, I wonder how that will factor in.

Well, they’re technically stimulants, but they mellow adhd folks out, as well as lessen the executive dysfunction and make focusing easier

Guanfacine is, as far as I know, the only ADHD med that lowers blood pressure. Might be worth asking about. I will say that when Starlet was taking it, it seemed to make him more aggressive.

I have been diagnosed as an adult, I wish I found out when I was in school! lol The meds help but I also changed my diet, there are some foods that can cause very similar symptoms and make a mild case look worse.
