@stefan24 It is not like that. An OCD symptom and a Psychotic symptom may look similar but they are different . OCD is caused due to shortage of Serotonin in the brain and Psychosis is caused due to the imbalance of Dopamine in the brain. A person can have both Psychosis and OCD and it is a challenge for a Psychiatrist to differentiate and treat them.
In my experience they are two different symptoms, but they can affect each other. I have delusions and I have obsessions, but sometimes they overlap.
in severe cases, that difference is almost indistinguishable. good luck psychiatrists!
Could you give an example about an overlap?
Well, I have a big thing about unseen creatures out to get us. Sometimes the creatures are invisible monsters, sometimes they live in our brains. (This is from before I was medicated by the way. I know this was a delusion now). I felt like I was the only one able to protect the world from these things and the only way I could do it was by completing certain tasks in certain ways. Like, moving my fingers in very specific patterns or taking a certain amount of steps. These tasks weren’t a delusion, they were an obsession, but they were intrinsically linked to the delusion.
alright i understand now.
But if the delusions go away, so does the ocd? or not?
No, I’ve had to treat them separately with different meds. I can have one, but not the other.
Poor guy!
I feel sorry for him.
Me, too. I have both OCD and Schizophrenia.
If you have a lump in your armpit, you should see a doctor for it.
I feel sorry for him too. It’d be hell working in that place too.
You should tell your pdoc either way. I don’t think you’ll shock em by saying so.
