My surgery has been scheduled!!! It’s bariatric, and I’ve been prepping for it for ages. I tried weight management, medication, physical therapy, etc. Nothing worked, so now I’m going for bariatric surgery. There’s a chance it’ll help my GERD too (gosh, I hope!). I am so excited that I’m just beside myself. It’ll be at the end of August. YAY!!!
Best of luck with it.
I think I saw that @CarleyGee had similar surgery.
My biggest hope is that it takes pressure off my knees so that they aren’t so horrible all the time.
ETA: They won’t do a knee replacement on me at my current weight. So if this doesn’t help my knees, it might help me get the bilateral replacement I need.
I’m really happy for you! It’ll be life-changing…keep us up-to-date after your surgery as you lose weight. That’s really exciting news!
Thanks, @WhiteRaven! I’ll definitely do updates. I want to be one of those awesome before/after photos where I’m standing with both legs in one leg of my “big girl” pants.
That’s why i originally went on my weight loss journey…they wouldn’t consider knee replacement surgery for me until i got my BMI under 38…then, when i lost the weight and my BMI is now 25, the knees don’t hurt so much and they told me i can now wait 5 more years to get it done. I hope it’s the same for you. You friggin’ got this!
Edit: My starting BMI was 50…
I’m at 49. It’s awful. I wasn’t like this a few years ago. Now I have a hard time doing anything at all! It’s nice to hear that someone had a good experience with weight loss!
Good luck with it all @Happy_H!
I’m checking out healthy food options now. I’m crazy excited. When the surgeon’s office called today and asked what I was thinking as far as time, I basically told me to just get me in ASAP because I couldn’t wait to start this journey. So, so excited!!!
I have a LOT of advice. I had a roux en y gastric bypass.
Youre going to be on a liquid diet for a month at the least. You wont be able to drink liquids super fast anymore. Be prepared to throw up for at least half a year as your body adjusts. Your portion sizes are going to be DRASTICALLY smaller. It will be shocking. Its been three years since my surgery and Im just now beginning to driink big gulps of water and eat more than a few bites of a meal.
Also you will need to start buyign supplements/vitamins. You will be deficient in a lot of things. Make sure you talk to your dietician about all of this!
Thanks! I appreciate the warnings A LOT, especially about throwing up. I’m supposed to have the roux en y as well. I’ve been working on finding protein shakes and fiber/protein items that I like. I don’t know if this is something that a person can really be well prepared for, but God knows I have to do something to change my life.
Ive had a lot of crazy surgeries, including a gastric pacemaker/stimulator, and the gastric bypass was definitely the most hardcore of them all. Lol the recovery is NO JOKE. Just know its that tough for everyone. I dont think its something you can really prepare for either. Mine was kind of done as an emergency and not for weight loss reasons, so i was already a strange case, but I ended up losing about 40 lbs of unwanted weight anyway. Which im very thankful for. My advice is learn how to eat super slow. One bite. Do something else. One bite. Do somthing else. Drink something. Decide if youre still hungry. Try and drink at the end of your meal. THats a lot easier said than done, I know though. I really struggled with that but it was true that liquids are filling.
I tried timing myself while eating dinner at what I considered to be a slow pace, and I have a buttload of work to do to on that. Doing something between bites is a great idea; thanks for that. I’m big into books and looking up information, so I can always read a little, take a bite. I imagine it’s much easier said than done. I’m not a surgery expert. To date, my worst was my lumbar spine. I remember how awful the days after the surgery were, and I’m trying not to think too hard on that. I’m jumping in, so no point in being nervous about the water now.
Out of curiosity, if you had GERD, did it help?
Isn’t bariatric surgery weight loss surgery I was just a few hours ago watching my 600lbs life and a guy actually was in the 800s and lost 600lbs idk how you can survive getting to 800lbs it’s insane there can be good results
But I want you to know it won’t be successful unless you make lifestyle changes the guy who lost the weight worked HARD to lose it and keep it off
I wish you the best of luck
Good luck with the surgery!
How exciting!
Best wishes with it.
Thanks, @AwesomeFisherman @Speedy @Truemist8. I’m absolutely willing to work hard at it. I don’t like what I see in the mirror. My previous weight was in the mid-150 lbs at 5’10" tall. I don’t have to get back to that, but I want to be healthy more than anything! I’m so tired of feeling awful because I took a few steps or something.
17 days to go!
Good luck with the surgery!
Good luck! I’m hoping for the best for you Its a big adjustment. Didn’t have GERD I don’t think, but i wouldn’t be surprised if I’m just forgetting something.
Don’t get discouraged if you cant hold down solids for a long time is my only real advice. I got super depressed after my surgery because I thought i had made the worst decision for my body. Its really complicated though. When your health is this bad, you have to approach things from every angle.
Thank you, @Jonathan2!
And many thanks to you too, @CarleyGee. I’ll keep it in mind not to get discouraged. I appreciate all of your advice.
