Support group?

Has anybody been to a support group for anxiety/sza ? My p-doc suggested this and I’m half interested to try it out. My fear is that I really dislike interacting with humans in real life. Has anybody done one?? What do you do in group therapy?

The closest experience I had to a group with my illness was being in hospital. I feel other patients with the illness sometimes often lack insight and so I’ve never kept in touch with them. Support groups maybe more effective because you need some insight to be in one to begin with

I have never been able to see it through

Plus some groups have a mixture of illnesses and even I could hear the penny drop when I said schizophrenia

I’ve been to a support group for sz at the university mental hospital downtown, and also did partial hospitalization for depression

The one downtown was good, but rarely did the same people show up from week to week. There were two or three of us that showed up consistently, so it was hard to really make connections with people. I’d try it again if it weren’t downtown, which is hard for me to get to

I’ve been going to a program we call Day Treatment since 2012. It’s helped me more than anything other than the meds. We have around 30-40 people that show up daily. They serve breakfast and lunch and bus people in. I knew everyone until we absorbed more from another program in a neighboring town. It’s a great program. I haven’t been going this past month, but I’m a regular. I’d recommend the program to anyone.

I think we have something similar…it’s called carriage house. It’s like a club house for people with mental illness. They serve food and I think you can just hang out and chill !!

Yeah we do groups during the day and meet one on one and have free time. Fridays are free days. We have a pool table and tv for video games YouTube ect. And we have a smoking table for us smokers. Sometimes I hang out outside at the smoking table most the day. It’s fun. I’d recommend day programs to anyone. There may be sone tough moments or it may take a while to get comfortable, but it’s really improved the quality of my life over the years.

I’ve done IOP (intensive outpatient) and that helped me out a lot with anxiety and depression. I went MWF at the behavioral health place in the next town over. They used DBT techniques which tend to work better for me.

Our group therapy started off with a check in. Then we did an educational activity. Then something like an art class or yoga together. Might be different in many places but I think a lot are done in “class” type formats.

I can’t and will not ever do group therapy again I was on edge when I was in group therapy at a mental hospital years ago when I was 25 now 48 and I don’t like counseling either I shutdown and won’t talk about my problems at either one and that doesn’t help me I do best one on one with a psych nurse and a Nurse Practitioner I would much rather have a psych Dr instead of a Nurse Practitioner but not changing until someone better comes along that I can trust more had a really good psych Doctor at one time but he is no longer accepting any new patients or former patients

I’m afraid I will be too nervous and insecure to really open up in group. I need more people on my team frfr
