They have done this before…
In the Victorian era, criminologists and scientists often used physiognomy and phrenology to study and categorize criminals based on their facial and head shapes.
- Physiognomy: This pseudoscience involved analyzing a person’s facial features to determine their character and personality traits. It was believed that certain facial characteristics could indicate criminal tendencies1.
- Phrenology: This involved studying the shape and size of the skull to infer psychological attributes and tendencies. Phrenologists believed that different areas of the brain were responsible for different personality traits, and these could be determined by examining the skull’s bumps and indentations2.
These methods have since been discredited and are no longer considered valid in modern criminology. However, they were influential in the development of early criminological theories.
