Well I think any underlying illness would be a prodromal period. I am not sure though. Even the professionals don’t know this.
There are often childhood mental illness symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and then the “actual” prodromal period starts with loss of function, subclinical psychotic symptoms, negative symptoms and cognitive decline. In my case (and quite often) this period does not start with symptoms of other mental illnesses such as anxiety or depression. I was depressed from early childhood, on and off, then experienced the prodromal period with mostly loss of function, negative symptoms and cognitive decline, followed only later by depression and then hypomania and then psychosis. In the years before this prodromal period I was happy, healthy and high-functioning.
I think we are in the realms of possibilities at this point @anon9798425.
Definitely. But most researchers agree that it is a biologically based illness that most healthy people can never develop. And that it starts very early, either in the womb or early childhood.
Anxiety is biologically based too. Complications would be just as so.
Not like SZ. Anxiety has a low heritability, and anyone can experience it. Anxiety disorders are among the least biologically based mental illnesses. There really aren’t many researchers who think SZ is a psychogenic disorder, and there aren’t many who think most cases of anxiety are genetic.
Anxiety is genetic though I am not sure about the relateability rates between sz and anxiety.
Anxiety disorders generally have the lowest heritability coefficients, even lower than depression, and bipolar and SZ have the highest heritability coefficients, with bipolar slightly higher than SZ. SZ heritability is in the .80-.85 range IIRC, and bipolar in the .85-.90 range.
I’ve had what nowadays is called SA since just before I was 14 . It’s never been officially diagnosed as it’s been seen as a part of more serious/severe things like sz and sz-a .
Social anxiety has been a theme throughout my life. I don’t think I’ll ever be rid of it, but it can get better.
In fact its not actually social anxiety instead its a type of OCD linked with social situation. Avoiding social situation, eye contact etc just like other kind of OCD like avoiding dirt, avoiding non symmetry etc.
When negative symptoms increases social anxiety, OCD etc reduces.
This might just be coincidental . I’ve had SA since I was nearly 14 . I would say it was less severe when I was more acutely ill /less self aware as to other people’s reactions to me . Maybe less insightful .
Yes I have social anxiety, sometimes I have to leave the room or go outside for awhile. I have trouble taking anxiety meds they just make it worse
