Similarities between (severe) autism and psychosis/sz

I personally see many similarities, could they be the same condition but different manifestation of it?

I don’t think they’re the same condition.

Why not? (15 char$)

I don’t think they’re the same. They are similar in some aspects but not same

Negative symptoms are similar to autism: asociality, alogia, apathy etc

The difference is that in autism symptoms appear much earlier in life whereas in sz symptoms appear later in life after the sz diagnosis. I believe we may have a negative symptoms treatment before an autism treatment, not sure if negative symptoms are permanent like autism though.

80% of the autistic people I know have delusions or hallucinations

Seems weird to me

I asked them to review my SZ diagnosis when I got diagnosed with Autism in May, but the doctors and health team don’t see much point in doing it.

However the assessor for ASD had worked with psychosis for 10 years before he became an autism specialist, so I have to accept both I’m afraid

The defining criteria are different. Basically sz/psychosis is a syndrome rather than a typical illness. That is to say that it makes little sense to speak of someone having psychosis without displaying the symptoms. I think the same holds for autism, but not entirely sure. Perhaps it is true that a higher rate of autists display psychotic features, i havent heard of it. In any case, that is not what makes for them being autistic.

Because they both have different symptoms.

They share similarities though
Also there is a reason why autism was called childhood SZ back in the days

Look, the definition of mental illness is a difficult topic by its very nature. Mental illnesses come and go in the diagnostic toolbox and even those that stay change in meaning. As soon as a clear cause is identified it effectively stops being a mental illness. I would not make too much of similar terms being used for other purpose 100 or even 50 years ago unless you are prepared to get a PhD in psychopathology. This is a minefield.

They say its genetics that determines if someone autistic will have psychosis. Interesting.
