My family is all sick today. I’ve never dealt with this as a parent before. Fellow parents, how do you care for your sick child when you just want to curl up and sleep for a week?
We have a stomach virus At least this house has three bathrooms.

Honestly? You suck it up as much as you can and just do your best. I always keep a few cans of chicken noodle soup in the cabinet during cold and flu season so I don’t have to deal with cooking. Give everyone a bucket, a roll of toilet paper for blowing their nose, and sleep or watch movies all week.
If you have enough energy to cook, and people are hungry, I recommended anything in the crock pot so you don’t actually have to do much.
Smart. I wish we had planned ahead like that. Mr. Star and I almost never get sick, and never together, so we just didn’t think about it. But we have rice, bananas, applesauce, and bread for toast. So that’s all good.
Make a buttload of their favourite soup.
Get Tylenol, Bendadryl and Buckleys.
Measure their temperature regularly.
What’s Buckley’s? I haven’t heard about it, yet.
Oh I forgot to mention. Foster care rules: we can’t give them even OTC medicine without doctor approval. And if we call the after hours number, they’ll tell us we need to go to the ER to be checked out because they always say that just to cover their own butts.
I think it’s a Canadian OTC cough medicine.
@Ninjastar I guess hot towels over the heads and chests would suffice imo.
Oohh smart. We do have a hot pad.
Thats crazy about the otc meds! As for caring while sick, what @LED said. That’s all you can do.
Mr. Star was a hero and went to the store to buy soup and crystallized ginger. Unfortunately he was too sick to remember to bring his wallet.
When my kids were little I’d give them gingerale or tea. Snuggle them all up in the livingroom with a favorite movie. A bucket nearby is a good way to avoid messes. Toast or soup are easy to stomach. Broth soups are better.
oh man, the whole family being sick must be something hard on you and Mr. Star…so sad he forgot his wallet…what a drag !! luckily we haven’t had flu over here for a few years…
I’d like to offer some advice, but we’ve never all been sick at the same time. And thank goodness, too- there are five of us and only 2 bathrooms! Also, I’m emetophobic, so when someone is throwing up, I hide and avoid the bathroom because I’m scared they’ll need in. I just hold it or wait until they are asleep to use the bathroom. My husband cleans up messes, bless his heart. He’s always done that.
