Should Paranoid Schizophrenics Be Air Traffic Controllers?

I can imagine it’s a stressful job. I don’t understand why on earth you’d want to include everyone in a job like that??

No, paranoid schizophrenics shouldn’t be air traffic controllers
It’s a very high stress job which can trigger sz symptoms while on the job

Too risky

Like me driving a school bus or passenger bus, which I have been allowed to do for over a decade? I am only a spare, occasional driver these days.

Some of us with SZ can handle workplace stress better than those without.

It should be a case by case kinda thing. Like @shutterbug said, some schizophrenics are very capable and competent people. Most of us however, are not. It just depends on how the disease manifests and how well you respond to the medication.

i couldnt do it anyway :frowning: its too high pressure and if i made a mistake idk if i could live with myself, I know someone who has a high end job despite his issues…(i would consider this extremely rare and only in special circumstances) some people are definitely more able than others.

It kinda sounds like where are they going to draw the line, would they exclude people with psychiatric issues from moe and more jobs, atm i know we are not allowed to sign up for military service or police service and you cannot practic as a doctor or a priest with a mental illness.

its a definite thing up for discussion but i dont like being told what i cant do :frowning: i hate it when i feel like i am being put into a box with more and more restrictions limiting what i can do.

I rented time on a real 737 simulator (we’re not discussing how much it cost) and I was told I handled the flight like a legit pilot. Landing was butter, too.

I think having paranoid schizophrenia, even if it has been in remission for years, should be an automatic disqualification from being an air traffic controller (ATC) because the risk is too high in regards to public safety. This can’t be done on a case-by-case basis because there’s no way of determining if or when the person’s paranoia will return.

This is not discrimination against people with mental illness because there are also physical disqualifications from being an ATC. For example, if you have a pacemaker you’re disqualified from being an ATC. Same goes for abnormal color vision, hearing impairment, diabetes requiring medication, and other physical reasons.

LOL. Mine never leaves. I have just learned not to pay attention to it.

I wholeheartedly agree with you @Catman
