Second Generation Antipsychotics and weight loss

I am 6’0" and somehow 310 lbs… my goal is to get to 250 by end of August so 7 months 60 lbs of weight loss.

I am on Latuda, Lithium, and take multivitamins daily.

What has worked for you guys in the past? I need serious weight loss, 310 lbs is ok if you are a 6’7" lineman for the NFL but not me.

Workout plans?
Cardio 5 days a week first month?
Muscle weighs significantly more than adipose tissue, and by building muscle, your body will draw energy from adipose tissue to support yourself.
I am not a fan of low carb, no carb.
I am a firm believer that you must have greater output than input, which is usually how it works for weight loss.

Thoughts, comments, ideas, plans?

I will begin with elliptical, swimming, low impact training because knees cannot support jogging and running at this weight.

Thank you!

The easiest way is to reduce the caloric input.

In March 2016 I was in the 290 - 300 pounds range. Over the next 18 months I got down to 220# with a reasonable diet and 26 minutes of intense cardio (elliptical at the gym) per day.

There are a lot of weight loss posts on this forum of people wanting to lose weight without exercising, however I hear of few success stories w/o working out.

Everyone wants to take the easy way out by modifying their diet with no exercise. But losing a bunch of weight without exercising is just not a realistic expectation.

I’m also 6’00” tall. So I was in your exact shoes 2 years ago.

Hope things workout for you.

Good luck!

I love to exercise. The meds just make it so hard. I’ve lost 20 lbs in last 4 months from diet alone. I do wish I could exercise. How do you do it @anon99082702? How do you get the energy?

@TheBest

I hit rock bottom. I Was very unhealthy and had to lose weight, and I felt like early-mid thirties would be a good time to make a lifestyle change.

I had to start slow though. I started with 5 minutes of light resistance elliptical and 5 minutes on the exercise bike. Over the months I worked up to 26 minutes of intense elliptical.

Yeah a bike and elliptical seem pretty healthy. I tried to run when I was 290 lbs and it was pretty hard for me to do. Now I’m 269 lbs and I should probably try again. I really have no desire to exercise on meds though. Guess I have to force myself. It’s a big reason I quit taking my meds a couple years ago. I lost a bunch of weight and I worked out 3 times a day, but I really screwed a lot of things up.

Latuda is one of the better meds for weight loss.

I take Latuda with Risperdal and the hunger is pretty bad unless I have an appetite suppressant.

Ask for topamax. I lost like 40 lbs doing nothing/changing nothing. But I had a severe paranoid/psychotic reaction to it. My doctor also said it lowers IQ by a point or two. But it helps combat antipsychotic induced weight gain.

I’ve tried topamax and I still had pretty bad hunger pains.

Good luck @DelusionalSandwich. You can do it man. You were studying for a dental school test right?

Yes, waiting on results. I will inform you all when I know. Would be great motivation to all who are suffering just as I suffered for 5+ years.

Summer 2013 I started on Seroquel at hospital, moved on to Zyprexa, then Risperdal, then Abilify, then finally got right on Latuda. I went from 225-235 in Summer 2013 to now 310 lbs in February 2018.

All Second Generation Antipsychotics have metabolic side effects; yes I blame the meds 50% of it.

Being schizoaffective, and being miserable for 5-6 years of my life straight, I had no desire to workout. A very close person to me said “I would rather have you fat and alive than skinny and dead.” Living sedentary lifestyle constitutes the other 50% of the weight gain along with poor diet.

Now that I have control again, I will begin with 3 days per week until I get warmed up and then 4, then 5, then 5 plus a pure cardio day with 1 day rest. You have to set goals, small first, medium next, then large ones that will take a while. I have made it this far; I am going to lose the weight. Not I might, or I think I can, I AM GOING TO DO IT.

You have the right attitude @DelusionalSandwich.

I was 275 before Latuda, I do not blame Latuda for weight gain necessarily. Lack of physical activity, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle is the cause. I am on 40 mg Latuda, and today at 308.8 lbs.

Good to know someone else is in the same shoes so to speak. I would like to ultimately get to 215-225 in that range, but not by August 2018, that is too much. Yes you must exercise to lose weight and not GO ON A DIET… instead CHANGE YOUR DIET. Everyone these days wants instant gratification and the easy way out/a pill that will lose the weight for you… does not work like that. You must work hard and make sacrifices to achieve long term goals.

Thanks for the input! I appreciate it!

But does latuda make u hungrier? Like that uncontrollable impulse to eat? I’m supposed to take 20 mg in a month or two and I’m deathly afraid of gaining weight again after losing 60. It’s been so hard to lose it

Olanzapine made me hungry. Saphris has not made me gain weight. I was gaining weight while I was on Latuda, but my doctor was changing my meds every month back then, so it could have been anything (he was awful- a pill pusher- and I no longer see him). I know that I am not active and probably will not be active most of the time except for walks during the spring, so I try to take that into account when I consider losing weight. I have to reduce my calories.

I have lost almost 100 lbs. without exercise though, but that is because I came off of a variety of meds that were contributing, and I lost that constant gnawing hunger. I am at a good weight now, though I would like to lost a bit of weight I gained since summer. Exercise AND a healthy diet is the best way to go, if you are able. I would love to be fit again. I don’t think I could run to save my life.

I worked out for first time today in several months… I cannot answer that accurately. All Second Gen Antipsychotics can cause metabolic problems and weight gain. I will be able to gauge my food consumption better after 2 months or so. Talk to doctor about changing your diet. Do NOT go on a diet… change your diet. If you want a burger once a week, have one. Want to eat half a pizza, go ahead. It is output/input ratio and you obviously want to and need to for general health reasons exercise even if it is cold outside.
