What a great idea. I hope NAMI and other groups start to follow their lead:
The Schizophrenia Societies of Canada are creating Schizophrenia Community Radio to empower the schizophrenia community. It empowers by giving voice to individuals living with schizophrenia, to their family caregivers and families, and to their healthcare and social services providers. They describe their experiences in their own voices.
Their voices are broadcast on internet radio. The broadcasts are stored in an archive which, as it grows, generates knowledge that, for everyone, advances understanding of schizophrenia, the challenges it creates, and the support that it needs.
Schizophrenia Society of Canada CEO, Dr. Chris Summerville, explains that sharing experiences will let individuals, their families and family caregivers know that they are not alone. He adds that “Sharing trustworthy, understandable and useful information gives hope that recovery from mental illness is possible with the support of a caring community.”
Schizophrenia Community Radio starts broadcasting on August 12, 2015. From then on its broadcasts will be available for any-day, any-time listening from anywhere with Internet. And on Wednesday of each week, a new Episode will be broadcast and added to the archive.
