How is hope related to schizophrenia?
Hope is a basic element of human existence, and is necessary for healthy coping. Hopelessness has been identified as a core characteristic of both depression and schizophrenia and may contribute to chronicity of the disorder. Once established, hopelessness may become a central limiting factor in the efficacy of treatment and rehabilitation of patients and can also adversely affect carers and significant others.
I think hope is definitely a factor in schizophrenia, or the lack of hope. It’s not just negative symptoms either, but the stigma of society that is placed on us (that affects our employment, schooling, and family making opportunities). I think building up your hope and dreams is like an act of resistance against discrimination! But man, it’s hard.
