A recent meta-analysis showed that breast cancer probably is more common in female patients with schizophrenia than in the general population. We therefore investigated the possible relationship between antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia (HPRL) and breast cancer risk in female patients with schizophrenia.
CONCLUSION:
Other breast risk factors than antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia (HPRL), such as nulliparity (not having had any children), obesity, diabetes mellitus, and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours (alcohol dependence, smoking, low physical activity), probably are of greater relevance in individual breast cancer cases within the population of female patients with schizophrenia.
Thanks @SzAdmin, just wanted to bump this up to the top for the ladies.
I’m going thru something right now with this… Found a lump 3-4 months ago and didn’t think much of it because my boobs are sort of lumpy as I get cysts. But they come and go. This particular bump stayed.
Yesterday I got a mammogram and ultrasound. It is indeed a lump, Lol. I am scheduled for a biopsy next week. I haven’t had a blood test, yet, to see about prolactin levels. Cancer doesn’t run in my family. My GP was very suspicious of all the AP’s I’ve been on contributing towards this. Yesterday got pretty scary really quickly.
I also wonder about the increased rate of breast cancer in women with SZ because they don’t seek treatment early enough?
Thankfully lumps are seen to very quickly now. I had a lump recently and it was biopsy everything was fine. It’s just a non benign lump … the one that’s not serious. Not sure if it’s benign or non. but they don’t mess about.
They get you to the breast clinic in less than 2 weeks and if it’s a cyst it’s drained on the day and if a biopsy is needed that’s also done on the day
Breast cancer has come along way. It’s nothing to mess about with. I’m glad it was all done quickly. It’s no fun waiting for results either. A week of hell
I had the biopsy today. It was pretty quick and painless. But the way the tech’s and dr’s were talking, didn’t seem like very good news. Now its just the waiting game, 3-5 days for the results.
Yes @Qwerty the process was super quick but had to wait for the holiday to pass.
