Reason for Weight Gain in those Taking Antipsychotics

Looks like the serotonin 2c receptor interacting with antipsychotics like olanzapine is the problem

That’s pretty big news.

Co-treating with lorcaserin prevented weight gain and significantly improved the metabolic profile of mice treated with olanzapine."

great news…im going to ask to go on the lorcaserin…I just googled it looks good

this is what it does

An anorectic or anorexic (from the Greek an- = “without” and orexis = “appetite”), also known as anorexigenic, anorexiant, or appetite suppressant, is a dietary supplement or drug which reduces appetite, resulting in lower food consumption, leading to weight loss.[1] By contrast, an appetite stimulant is referred to as orexigenic.

This is old news, 5ht2c antagonism makes people ravenous. They can’t make full agonists at the receptor (opposite effect) without causing harmful side effects. So we will remain fat.

it makes one not over eat

Aripiprazole is a partial agonist at 5ht2c, meaning in theory that in high serotonin environment it stimulates appetite and does the opposite in a low serotonin environment. That’s one way of getting around it.

Serotonergic (/ˌsɛrətəˈnɜːrdʒɪk, ˌsɪr-/[1][2]) or serotoninergic (/ˌsɪrəˌtoʊnəˈnɜːrdʒɪk/[3]) means “pertaining to or affecting serotonin”. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter. A synapse is serotonergic if it uses serotonin as its neurotransmitter. A serotonergic neuron produces serotonin. A substance is serotonergic if it produces its effects via interactions with the serotonin system, such as by stimulating or blocking neurotransmission.

A serotonergic or serotonergic agent is any chemical that modifies the effects of serotonin in the body.

i want to try lorcaserin and olanzapine together only reason im not on olanzapine now is because of the weight gain so without it the med would be perfect for me

I think these anti psychotics tend to increase the appetite which results in over eating and hence the weight gain. They effect the metabolism of the body also. We should be careful not to over eat and also do exercise to keep our weight in check.
