Rare genetic variations linked to schizophrenia found

In the largest study of its kind, researchers have discovered rare genetic variations linked to schizophrenia, a severe mental disorder that often includes psychotic experiences, such as delusions or hearing voices that are not there.

The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, an international team led by
Jonathan Sebat from the University of California San Diego School of
Medicine in the US analysed the genomes of more than 41,000 people.

Their study, published in the journal Nature Genetics, revealed
several regions of the genome where mutations increase schizophrenia
risk between four- and 60-fold.

These mutations, known as copy number variants, are deletions or duplications of the DNA sequence.

A copy number variant may affect dozens of genes, or it can disrupt or duplicate a single gene.

DOn’t know this kind of stuff going to help or not…!!!

I lived in a home with a sza father. My older brother developed sza at a very young age. I look back now and I too was first showing symptoms at a very young age. Basically growing up was a living Hell. And my adult live was a living Hell until I finally got some medication that worked and I stopped trying to self medicate. My cousin on my dad’s side also has sever sza. During a sever psychosis I had a vision of my DNA and visualized the defect. Soon after I fell into the darkest depression I had ever experienced. I know now the whole vision was kind of nutty but it was one step closer to reality in a way.
